Kirkasta ja kärkevää pohdintaa taiteesta ja elämästä Markku Envall pureutuu esseekokoelmassaan arkiseen ja ylevään, jokapäiväiseen ja ikuiseen. Nimiesseessä hän viihtyy torilla, tapahtumassa jonka tarkoituksena oli menneisyydessä houkutella maalaiset kaupunkiin. "Katututussa" tavataan ihmisiä sattumalta julkisilla paikoilla, vailla sovittujen tapaamisten sosiaalisia paineita. Envall määrittelee "Itsemurhan paradoksin": Jos todella pitää itsemurhaa tärkeänä tekona, sitä ei voi tehdä, koska sen tekeminen tuottaa mahdottomuuden tehdä sitä. Hän pohtii ennustamisen problematiikkaa ja perehtyy viime vuosikymmeninä esitettyihin arvioihin maailman tulevaisuudesta. Tavaratalo taivasalla sisältää runsaasti taide-esseitä, joissa Envall pureutuu Ian McEwanin, Akira Kurosawan, Merete Mazzarellan ja Nikolai Gogolin teoksiin. Hän tutkii mikä koitui Macbethin kohtaloksi ja näkee Anna Kareninan parisuhteen ajan kestävänä karttana. Skalpellintarkalla kielellään Envall tuo uutta vanhaan ja kuluneeseen sekä nostaa kestävän kulttuuriperimän nykyaikaan. Markku Envallin (s. 1944) laajaan tuotantoon kuuluu aforismeja, esseitä, runoja, fragmentteja ja yksi romaanikin. Hän voitti Finlandia-palkinnon vuonna 1990. Markku Envall (s. 1944 Hämeenlinna) on Helsingissä asuva filosofian tohtori, kirjallisuuden tutkija ja Finlandia-palkittu kirjailija. Envall on julkaissut tutkimuksia, esseitä, runoja, kuunnelmia, romaanin sekä aforismikokoelmia. Fragmentteja, jota voidaan pitää aforistiikan laajempana muotona, Envall julkaisi teoksessaan Kieltä terävämpi giljotiini (2006). Envallin väitöskirja Suomalainen aforismi - keinoja, rakenteita, lajeja, ongelmia (1987) käsittelee suomenkielistä aforismikirjallisuutta. Hän on myös toimittanut teoksen Aforismin vuosisata (1997), joka sisältää aforismeja 54 suomalaisen aforistikon tuotannosta.
