Living in the Information Age means that the more information is generated, the more new information is required. A large contributor to the rapid increase of new information and its ease of accessibility is the Internet. The backbone of the Internet is the TCP Internet protocol. New emerging network technology, ATM, achieves data throughput never before possible. Layering TCP/IP over ATM will increase throughput performance that TCP/IP could not achieve alone. With the growing desire to use satellites as a medium for the Internet as well as the large amounts of digitized communication that already occurs daily via satellites, the TCP/IP proposes to become a standard for satellite communication. The high data rates of ATM, however, is very appealing for use on satellite links in an effort to make them more cost effective. Obstacles exist which prevent TCP/IP over ATM in its current state from becoming an efficient way to send information to and from satellites. This paper looks at the unique challenges of networking via satellite links, discusses the impact of the satellite links on TCP/IP over ATM and the limitations of TCP/IP which are caused, and investigates solutions to these limitations.

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Quality of Service (QoS) experiments using the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) were performed for various link delays. The link delay was set to emulate a Wide Area Network (WAN) and a Satellite Link. The purpose of these experiments was to evaluate the ATM QoS requirements for applications that utilize advance TCP/IP protocols implemented with large windows and Selective ACKnowledgements (SACK). To assist in the design and understanding of future global networks, this paper describes the practical and simulation experiences gained from a TCP/IP on ATM network over a high speed satellite link and presents performance comparison studies of such networks with the same host/traffic configurations over local area (LAN) and wide area (WAN) networks. It was found that the satellite systems deliver performance similar to the terrestrial networks regardless their path latencies in cases where the communication channels exhibit a low bit error rate (BER). NASA's Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS), with its special characteristics and high data rate satellite channels, and the ACTS ATM Internetwork (AAI) were used in these experiments to deliver broadband traffic. Network performance tests were carried out using application-level software (ttcp, Netspec) on OC-3 and OC-12 ATM satellite links.

This report presents a survey of the traffic management Issues in the design and implementation of satellite Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. The report focuses on the efficient transport of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) traffic over satellite ATM. First, a reference satellite ATM network architecture is presented along with an overview of the service categories available in ATM networks. A delay model for satellite networks and the major components of delay and delay variation are described. A survey of design options for TCP over Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR), Guaranteed Frame Rate (GFR) and Available Bit Rate (ABR) services in ATM is presented. The main focus is on traffic management issues. Several recommendations on the design options for efficiently carrying data services over satellite ATM networks are presented. Most of the results are based on experiments performed on Geosynchronous (GEO) latencies.
