This book is a well-researched teaching aid to teach children from ages 3 and 4 to learn to read and speak English. You need to have completed Book 1 Teach to Read before using this book. In Book 1 Teach to Read using Phonics, we developed the following skills: · Being able to recite the full alphabet · Identifying lowercase letters for the alphabet · Identifying individual alphabet letters for a particular letter within a group of words · Being able to sound out each of the lowercase letters of the alphabet · Identifying a picture of a thing or an animal that can be associated with that letter eg dog and “d” · Improving motor skills by colouring in letters and line drawings. Also, in Book 1 we identified that a pre-requisite was that children could already recite their alphabet. In Book 2 Teach to Read using Phonics we will develop the following skills: · Reciting the list of letter sounds for the lowercase letters of the alphabet · Being able to sound out the letters of simple words and join them to read a word · Continued identification of a picture of a thing or an animal that can be associated with that letter eg “dog” and “d” · Being able to recognise and say some of the most commonly used words in the English language eg “the”, as found in the list “Words to Learn”. · Reinforcement of words learned found in the list “Words I Know”. · Learning to recognize the Big Letters that are associated with the Little Letters. · Learning to recognise a number of sight words such as “the” and “that” which are used to create sentences in Book 3. For Book 2, the pre-requisite is that children can recognize the capital letters of the Alphabet sounds found at the back of Book 2. In Book 3 we will continue to build the skill of sounding out words based on what the children have learned in Book 1 and Book 2, culminating in reading simple sentences. As well in Book 3, we will continue to build the skill of visual discrimination by identifying features in a colour picture as we teach the child to read simple sentences. Visual discrimination can be defined as the ability to determine and classify objects, symbols, shapes, etc. by differences in colour, form, size, texture, or orientation, or shape by the eyes receiving visual input and analysing that information. As was stated in Book 1, one of the keys to learning is repetition, repetition, repetition which used to be called rote learning. I know all of my times tables without thinking because they were drilled into me. I still know lots of nursery rhymes because we repeated them as children and then I taught them to my own children. 50 years on, I have used repetition, repetition, repetition to learn advanced tennis strokes and become a world- ranked Senior Tennis player. So, learning to read using phonics does work and you can start children learning as young as three years of age. How Singapore is achieving 90+% literacy is discussed in Book 1 Teach to Read so it will not be repeated here. Let me repeat here that reading has to be strongly associated with enjoyment. My advice to parents is to have the child next to you on a sofa or a bed when you read them stories.
