"The present study examined parents' and teachers' acceptability of conjoint behavioral consultation for children with problem behaviors at school and at home. Also examined was the relationship between perceived treatment acceptability and treatment outcome, and time to treatment effectiveness. An A/B design was used and participants included 14 children, their parents, and teachers. Results indicated that conjoint behavioral consultation was an equally acceptable intervention prior to and following implementation for both parents and teachers. Results also indicated that parents' perceptions of treatment acceptability at posttest were not related to the effectiveness of the intervention as measured by direct observations. On the other hand, teachers' perceptions of treatment acceptability following implementation were found to be positively related to the effectiveness of the intervention. Furthermore, both parents and teachers perceptions of treatment acceptability were found to be significantly related to perceptions of treatment effectiveness and time to effectiveness. Results are discussed in light of their practical and theoretical implications." --

Abstract: Subsequent to government mandates over the past several decades, students with disabilities represent an increasingly larger proportion of the regular education classroom. However, most regular education teachers have little training in special education, thus behavioral consultants are offered to teachers to assist in meeting the needs of these students. Predictors of successful behavioral consultation have been reported but additional research is warranted as published literature reveals teachers continue to implement treatment as indicated at a low rate (Wickstrom, Jones, LaFleur & Witt,1998). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether inducing teacher empathy for the student leads to an increase in treatment acceptability. Teachers completed a demographic questionnaire and a measure of Agreeableness, and then read one of two typewritten instructions based on Coke, et al. (1978). The instructions were designed to influence empathic responding. After receiving instructions, participants listened to an audiotaped case description of a child who exhibits behavioral problems in the classroom. They then rated the extent to which they focused on the behavioral or emotional aspects of the case description. Next, participants listened to a proposed treatment for the behavior problems. Lastly, they completed the Usage Rating Profile - Intervention (URP-I; Chafouleas, Briesch, Riley-Tillman, & McCoach, in press), which assesses treatment acceptability, understanding, feasibility, and systems support. Results revealed the empathy manipulation (listening focus) was not related to any of the dependant variables (treatment acceptability, treatment understanding, perceived systems support). However, level of Agreeableness and treatment cost were found to be significantly predictive of several measures. Specifically, low cost treatments were rated as more acceptable, better understood, and requiring less perceived systems support to implement. Additionally, participants higher in Agreeableness tended to rate interventions as more acceptable than their counterparts who were low in Agreeableness.

The present study examined the effects of a streamlined and virtual version of conjoint behavioral consultation (CBC) as implemented by trained school professionals (e.g., school psychologists, special education teachers). The effectiveness of CBC was examined using a multiple baseline across participants design among three students with or at risk for social-emotional and behavior challenges and demonstrating disruptive behavior problems at school. In addition to examination of student outcomes, the parent-teacher relationship, parent and teacher problem-solving competence, and CBC acceptability and feasible were evaluated. The extent to which CBC fit into existing multitiered systems in schools was also examined. Results indicated that two of three students demonstrated a decrease in disruptive behavior at school following implementation of co-developed evidence-based intervention plans. Although only one of three teachers reported improvements in the parent-teacher relationship, three of four parents reported improvements in the parent-teacher relationship. All parents and teachers reported improvements in their competence in problem solving. CBC was reported as acceptable according to parents, teachers, and consultants. Consultants perceived some elements of contextual fit as being well-aligned into existing multitiered systems in schools. Teachers reported that evidence-based intervention plans had moderate to strong contextual fit. Implications for CBC research, including considerations related to addressing barriers as well as scaling up CBC implementation in school-based settings are discussed.

The growing strength-based approach to the assessment and intervention of students' social and emotional learning competencies has significant implications for the practice of behavioral consultation in school settings (Zins & Elias, 2007). The current research study utilized four separate multiple baseline case studies across students in order to evaluate the effects of behavioral interventions developed in accordance with either a traditional model of behavioral consultation (Bergen & Kratochwill, 1990), or a proposed strength-based model of behavioral consultation, developed in accordance with the tenets of strength-based assessment as described in Epstein et al. (2003). Dependent variables of interest across both models of consultation included direct observations of student on-task behavior and frequency counts of teachers' use of general praise, behavior specific praise and reprimand statements during specified observational periods. Estimates of social validity regarding teachers' perceptions of the acceptability, effectiveness and feasibility of the interventions developed through both types of consultation were also obtained at the conclusion of each intervention. Results indicated that while behavioral interventions implemented across both models of consultation led to positive improvements in student on-task behaviors and increases in teachers' use of general praise and behavior specific praise statements, teachers engaged in interventions developed through the strength-based model of behavioral consultation had significantly higher rates of behavior specific praise than they did when implementing interventions through the traditional behavioral model. This study adds to the existing literature by providing a detailed description and theoretical blueprint for future researchers regarding how to integrate the growing strength-based movement of assessment and intervention with school-based behavioral consultation initiatives in order to improve the social, emotional and behavioral competencies of individual students, as well as facilitate the establishment and maintenance of positive teacher-student interactions in the classroom setting.
