This Personal Improvement Project was completed with the intention of designing a curriculum that applies Bruner's (1966) enactive, iconic, symbolic sequence of instruction to teaching rhythm reading to beginning instrumentalist in a middle school band program. The curriculum includes a scope and sequence, lesson plans, explanations of how to use the lesson plans, assessments and worksheets, and reflections of the teaching experience. A pre- and post-assessment was administered to each student at the beginning and end of the school year. The assessments showed substantial student growth in reading and performing rhythmic notation. Through this project I found that the enactive, iconic, symbolic sequence of instruction was efective in teaching students the concept of rhythm. Students also appeared to be more independent in reading and performing rhythm from notation than previous classes I have taught.
