"Tears over the Deserts tells the life of the young Jackson Kaujeua until he leaves his motherland to go into exile. Jackson tells of his rural childhood herding goats and drinking omaere; of traditional Herero life and the ceremonies of circumcision and transition to adulthood; of his worlds of school and work; and the call of music that has charted his adult career. Brought up by his grandmother outside Keetmanshoop, Jackson and his family were forced to move in the 1960's to an area designated for Hereros under the Odendaal Commission. His life was coloured by the deprivations and discriminations of South African rule but this story is not one of defeat. Mischievous as a boy and always landing in trouble, he fell foul of the security police as a young man through his refusal to accept the role of colonial subservience. Eventually this forced him to flee his home and go into exile. At once touching and humorous, Tears over the Deserts captures the lively character of Namibia's foremost singer. It is a telling reflection of the spirit of Namibians in times of great adversity"--Publisher's website.

Halima Bashir was born in the remote desert of Darfur, Sudan, and was raised in a loving family that was part of the black African Zaghawa tribe. In a rare privilege for a girl of her village, she attended junior and secondary school in a nearby town. Bashir proved herself academically gifted and went on to study medicine, becoming her tribe’s first qualified doctor, much to the pride of her father. But war had already broken out in Darfur when Dr. Bashir began her practice, and the violence perpetrated by Janjaweed Arab militias was spreading. In January 2004, the militia attacked a remote school and gang-raped 42 schoolgirls. Dr. Bashir was the only source of help in her nearby one-room medical clinic. When she dared to speak out about this atrocity to officials from the international community, she was arrested by the secret police, interrogated, tortured and herself raped. She escaped to her home village, but the violence followed her there, and her beloved father and many of her relatives were killed in reprisal. Desperate, Dr. Bashir was forced to flee Sudan in 2005 to seek a tenuous asylum in Britain. Once there, the hardship and loss caught up with her, leading to despair that only her new husband, also in exile, and her own strength of will could cure. Tears of the Desert is Halima’s tale, told in her own words and framed by her love for her new son. It is a wrenching portrait of a young girl’s innocence lost, of a family and a people destroyed, of the endemic discrimination against black African Sudanese by their Arab compatriots, and of the senseless violence that erupted and continues unabated today. It is Dr. Bashir’s belief that these words should be shared with readers so that the world will know about the conflict in Darfur and about the horrific violence that is occurring between fellow Muslims. This is Halima Bashir’s story, but it is also the story of a nation that is ripping itself to pieces.

At eighteen, after an ugly quarrel with her father, Raine leaves home and moves to Halifax. Years later, Raine's father has suffered a heart attack, and her brother, a widowed youth pastor with two young daughters, has vanished under suspicious circumstances. Are you interested in Christian service or studying for the Christian ministry? This book is uniquely designed to help you prepare for the challenges ahead and is endorsed by a pastor who served his church for thirty-eight years and the presidents of two seminaries who will recommend it to their students. Karl Hellers new book, Tears in the Desert: Lessons from the Joys and Sorrows of Gods Call, provides an up-close and personal account from the frontline of pastoral ministry. This is a refreshingly candid account of why pastoral ministry is so very challenging and at the same time so very important. By recounting the triumphs and tragedies of his own ministry, Dr. Heller is an able and wise guide, especially for seminarians preparing for pastoral ministry. Frank A. James III, DPhil, PhD, President and Professor of Historical Theology, Biblical Theological Seminary, Philadelphia

On March 3, 1871, Congress established the United States Centennial Commission, charged with “an International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil and Mine.” Philadelphia was chosen as the site of the Centennial Exhibition. On June 5, 1874, President Grant extended invitations to the governments of the world to participate in the Exhibition. All thirty-nine nations accepted. This was a six-month international event, running from May 1876 to November 1876. The Centennial Exhibition attracted over ten million visitors. It was a showcase of American ingenuity and inventions. Typewriters, telephones, and steam pistons as well as art were displayed. The invited countries displayed their own national products and art. The Turkey delegation brought its crown jewels. While City Council argued about final funding for City Hall, the population and visitors celebrated. American women could not vote. Discrimination and persecution against African Americans was prevalent. Regardless, people met, fell in love, and committed crimes.
