Excerpt from Technical Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics The following paragraph is an adaptation from the preface of the first edition of this work, published ten years ago; it applies to the present edition. This book might be described fairly as a theoretical mechanics for students of engineering. It is not comparable to books commonly called Theoretical Mechanics, generally intended for students of mathematics or physics; nor to books commonly titled Applied Mechanics which generally include a treat ment of strength of materials, hydraulics, etc., for students of engineering. The title Technical Mechanics seems fairly appropriate for this book; and inasmuch as it is not otherwise used in this country, it was so adopted. On the theoretical side, practically each subject discussed herein has a direct bearing on some engineering problem.' The applications were selected and presented for the purpose of illustrating a principle of mechanics and for training students in the use of such principles, not to furnish information, except incidentally, about the structure, machine, or what not to which the application was made. Ten years use of the book asa text in the author's classes has suggested many changes; and in recent years the need of a new collection of problems has become urgent. Accordingly, a revision was undertaken, and the effort has resulted in a practically rewritten book. Indeed the only portion of the former edition used again with little or no change is the present Appendix A. Though containing fewer pages than the old book, the new one because of its (nearly one-third) larger printed page contains more material than the old. Excerpt from Technical Mechanics, Vol. 1 Bodies act upon each other in various ways, producing different kinds of results. Any action of one body upon another which, when exerted alone, would result in motion of the body acted upon, or in change of motion if the body is already moving, is called force; the word is a general term for push and pull. Our earliest notions about forces are based on our experience with forces exerted by or: upon ourselves. Through this experience we have learned that a force has magnitude, place of application, and direction, sometimes called the characteristics of a force. Excerpt from Applied Mechanics for Engineers: A d104-Book for Engineering Students In the preparation of this book the author has had in mind the fact that the student finds much difficulty in seeing the applications of theory to practical problems. For this reason each new principle developed is followed by a number of applications. In many cases these are illustrated, and they all deal with matters that directly concern the engineer. It is believed that problems in mechanics should be practical engineering work. The author has endeavored to follow out this idea in writing the present volume. Accordingly, the title "Applied Mechanics for Engineers" has been given to the book. The book is intended as a text-book for engineering students of the Junior year. The subject-matter is such as is usually covered by the work of one semester. In some chapters more material is presented than can be used in this time. With this idea in mind, the articles in these chapters have been arranged so that those coming last may be omitted without affecting the continuity of the work. The book contains more problems than can usually be given in any one semester. While it is difficult to present new material in the matter of principles, much that is new has been introduced in the applications of these principles. The subject of Couples is treated by representing the couples by means of vectors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from d104-Book of Mechanics: For Colleges and Technical Schools The science of mechanics, as all other departments of physical science, has made great advances in recent years, in this book I have endeavored to unfold the principles of modern mechanics systematically, and also to call the attention of the student to the more useful applications of the subject. It has long seemed to me that the more practical parts might with advantage be presented to the beginner at least as fully as the more abstract, and that, too, without any sacrifice of scientific precision. The book is so arranged that the student, whether intending to make a specialty of engineering, physics, or astronomy, can branch out in his special direction without difficulty. It has been the aim to make the examples as practical as possible. Thus while writing the Strong locomotive (No. 444) was brought out by the L. V. R. R. Co., and the Westinghouse air-brake tests (1887) were being made. Many problems founded on these and other mechanisms have been introduced. It has been the aim also to make the examples typical. Instead of making them mere numerical illustrations of formulas, the idea has been to encourage independent thought. In many cases different methods of solution have been indicated to encourage the student to trust rather to an independent investigation than to an answer so called. Considerable attention has been paid to the graphical method of solution, guarding, however, against making it a "complicated weapon with which one can attack all sorts of problems which are more easily solved in other ways." Excerpt from Mechanics Problems: For Engineering Students It is now generally recognized, I think, that this subject should cover first of all the elements and fundamental principles that form the basis of every engineer's knowledge that these necessary elements and principles are best understood and best remem bered by actually solving numerous problems that present important facts illustrative of every-day engi neering practice, and arouse the student's interest far better than abstract examples which can be easily formulated from imaginary conditions. Excerpt from Mechanics for Engineers: A Text-Book of Intermediate Standard Engineering students constitute a fairly large proportion of those attending the Mechanics classes in technical colleges and schools, but their needs are not identical with those of the students of general science. It has recently become a common practice to provide separate classes in Mathematics, adapted to the special needs of engineering students, who are in most institutions sufficiently numerous to justify similar provision in Mechanics. The aim of this book is to provide a suitable course in the principles of Mechanics for engineering students. Excerpt from Mechanics: A d104-Book for Engineers This book is intended to give a working knowledge of the principles of Mechanics and to supply a foundation upon which intelligent study of Strength of Materials, Stresses in Structures, Machine Design, and other courses of more technical nature may rest. In the development of this subject, emphasis is put upon the physical character of the ideas involved, while mathematics is. employed as a convenient tool for the determination and expression of quantitative relations. Analytical and graphical methods are given together and each is interpreted in terms of the other. While the principal stress is placed upon Mechanics as a science, considerable attention is given to Mechanics as an art. In the text, in some of the problems, and in many of the illustrative examples, methods of calculation are suggested by means of which accurate results may be most readily obtained. The definitions of work and potential energy, together with the solution of problems of statics by the method of virtual work are given early. In the treatment of dynamics, the definitions of kinetic energy and its application to the conditions of variable motion are introduced as soon as possible. In equations involving acceleration or energy, the common commercial units are employed - the pound mass as the unit of mass and the weight of the pound mass as the unit of force. In order to clear up the confusion which results from the fact that physicists use one set of units while some engineering writers use another. Chapter XVIII is devoted to a discussion of the various systems. The author acknowledges his obligations to many of his colleagues who have assisted in the preparation of this book. P. W. Ott of the Department of Mechanics checked the problems of several chapters. S. A. Harbarger of the Department of English read all the manuscript and assisted in the final revision. Excerpt from Physics for Technical Students: Mechanics and Heat We now have a large and rapidly increasing number of students who are interested primarily In the practical side of education. 1 With the needs of these students In mind, the practical side of the subject has been emphasized throughout the book. This method, it is believed, will sustain interest in the subject by showing its application affairs, and will, it is hoped, be appreciated by both students and instructors in Agriculture and Engineering. In this connection, attention is directed to sections 18, 19, 20, 29, 30, 39, 44, 54, 56, 60, 62, 63, 76, 80, 83, 108, 109, 111, 134, 138, 170, 185, 189, 190, 195, 200, 204, 205, 206, 218 and Chapters VII, XII, XVII, and XVIII. More space than usual has been devoted to the treatment of Force, Torque, Translatory Motion, and Rotary Motion. It is felt that the great importance of these topics, which underlie so much of the subsequent work of the student, warrants such treatment. Probably everyone who has taught the theory of electrical measuring instruments, for example, has realized that the student's greatest handicap IS the lack of a thorough grasp of the fundamental principles of mechanics. The student who has thoroughly mastered elementary mechanics has done much toward preparing himself for effective work in technical lines.
