Keine andere Erscheinung in der Geschichte der Menschheit hat unser gesellschaftliches und privates Leben bis heute so nachdrucklich beeinflusst wie die rasante Entwicklung der modernen Technik. Ungeachtet dieser Realitat fuhrt die Philosophie der Technik bis heute lediglich eine Randexistenz im philosophischen Kanon. Von daher wurde auch die Geschichte der Technikphilosophie (die bis in die achtziger Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts im Ubrigen eine fast ausschliesslich deutsche Domane war) bisher nur unzureichend wissenschaftlich erforscht, die Technikphilosophie der DDR uberhaupt nicht. Insbesondere auf diesem Gebiet war also Pionierarbeit zu leisten, deren teils uberraschende Ergebnisse in diesem Band vorliegen. Pionierarbeit war auch insofern zu leisten, als in den wenigen bisher vorliegenden Untersuchungen zur Geschichte der Technikphilosophie die jeweiligen konkreten gesellschaftspolitischen Hintergrunde, ohne deren Kenntnis eine bestimmte philosophische Entwicklung letztlich niemals adaquat verstanden werden kann, kaum beachtet worden waren. Der Autor untersucht daher zunachst die jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen, wirtschaftlichen und ideologischen Gegebenheiten von BRD und DDR und erforscht und vergleicht auf diesem Hintergrund die verschiedenen Technikphilosophien der beiden deutschen Staaten."

Die Technikphilosophie, das „Nachdenken über Technik“, über das, was Technik ist, was sie mit uns macht und was wir mit ihr machen, führt trotz ihrer immensen Bedeutung für unser Leben und unsere Zukunft noch immer, so zumindest der erste Eindruck, ein Nischendasein in der Gesamtheit der philosophischen Veröffentlichungen in Deutschland. Genaueres Nachforschen zeigt allerdings, dass de facto zahlreiche technikphilosophische Arbeiten existieren, die allerdings selten von einer größeren interessierten Öffentlichkeit wahrgenommen wurden. Einen Sonderfall stellen dabei die diesbezüglichen Leistungen der DDR dar, die bis dato überhaupt noch nicht wissenschaftlich erforscht wurden und daher auch in Vergessenheit zu geraten drohen. Von daher leistet die vorliegende Dokumentation, die diesen Bereich erstmalig erforscht, Pionierarbeit. Darüber hinaus stellt der Autor aber auch zahlreiche wichtige technikphilosophische Publikationen aus der BRD bis 1989 vor, deren Bedeutung bisher kaum wahrgenommen oder zumindest stark unterschätzt wurde. All dies geschieht in dem Wissen, dass bei einer solchen philosophiegeschichtlichen Untersuchung der gesamtgesellschaftliche Hintergrund, auf dem sich ein philosophisches Gedankengebäude entwickelt, stets detailliert mitbedacht werden muss. Der Autor setzt sich daher ausführlich mit der Entwicklung des unterschiedlichen politisch-wirtschaftlichen Selbstverständnisses der beiden deutschen Staaten auseinander und untersucht anschließend vor diesem Hintergrund die verschiedensten technikphilosophischen Veröffentlichungen in Ost und West.

Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities?
