The objective was to study the effects of map scale, map reference point variables, and training on the ability of pilots to estimate direction using Army tactical maps for low-level navigation. Twenty-four experienced officer and warrant officer pilot personnel working with various map reference point conditions made direction estimates using 48 maps with a scale of 1:100,000 and 48 maps with a scale of 1:250,000. The effect of training was studied by using a test-train-retest-delay-retest procedure. Performance was measured in terms of absolute error, in degrees, between the estimated direction and the correct direction. Analyses showed that average error in direction estimation using tactical maps was reduced significantly by training, dropping from a mean of 6.1 degrees before training to 4.8 degrees after training. There were also significant differences in accuracy of direction estimates as a function of map scale, distance between reference points, and compass octant in which the reference points were located. A prototype training course to apply map interpretation and terrain analysis (MITAC-II) to low-altitude fixed-wing navigation was developed to improve visual orientation skills of Marine Corps aircrews. The course consisted of a slide-tape illustrated lecture and a series of dynamic simulation exercises using 70-mm cinematic techniques. Fifteen advanced aircrew training instructors participated in the demonstration and evaluation of the course and served as subject-matter experts. MITAC-II was pronounced effective in improving low-altitude orientation with specific improvements recommended for the production model. (Author).

Factors that influence low level navigation and affect Army capability in conducting low level missions were surveyed. The nature of improvements in equipment, procedures, and training needed to provide the Army with effective operational capability in low level navigation were indicated. Major conclusions from the survey include limited capability in low level aerial navigation as affecting future Army combat effectiveness; the rapid reaction mission over unfamiliar terrain in low level navigation; potential improvements in training or procedures for present navigation system and equipment; a simple automatic dead reckoning navigation computer in routine attainment of operationally effective low level navigation performance; and reorienting navigation procedures and training to simplified line of position navigation techniques. Geographic disorientation is a potentially dangerous problem for all types of pilots under all types of flight conditions. The problem is even more serious for helicopter pilots who often fly at low altitudes and who must be precisely aware of their location with respect to obstructions in their environment. Any pre-flight method which can increase a pilot's geographic knowledge of the flying environment should therefore offer potential benefits to safety. In this experiment the traditional pre-flight navigation training method of map-study was compared to four versions of a relatively new method known as rehearsal flight. In the rehearsal flights pilots actively flew or passively watched either a high- or a low-detail version of a simulated flight through the target environment. Subjects then transferred to a second simulator where their navigation accuracy was assessed on the evaluation flight. The map-study subjects, rather than participating in a rehearsal flight, used the map to mentally rehearse the flight before transferring to the second simulator and flying the evaluation flight. The results indicated that navigation accuracy was not affected by the rehearsal flight's level of scene detail. However, the subjects who actively controlled the rehearsal flight, as compared to those who passively watched it, navigated more accurately on the evaluation flight. But when the map-study group was compared to the rehearsal flight groups, no substantial differences in navigation accuracy were found. In fact, the map-study subjects showed an advantage on certain measures of their global knowledge of the layout of the environment (survey knowledge). These results indicate that at least for relatively simple missions, a structured map-study session may still be the most appropriate tool for preparing pilots for the navigational aspects of an upcoming flight.

The low altitude orientation of this book is different, but not difficult. The objective of this book is to teach low altitude maneuvering techniques, including the basic low ground effect takeoff, the energy management 1g regardless of bank angle turn, and the apparent brisk walk rate of closure approach, not covered in the normal flight school program. Consider the high altitude orientation of ""The Myth of the Downwind Turn."" In maneuvering flight, including takeoff and landing, this disrespect of wind management is dangerous. The slower groundspeed and tighter radius of the upwind portion of a turn is critical where horizontal space is limited. Attempting to maintain altitude in strong downdrafts and updrafts results in our spending more time in down air and less time in up air for a net loss in altitude and groundspeed. Thermal and orographic lift is critical for small airplanes ""in"" the mountains where the major portion of any cross country is maneuvering flight.
