Besides new methods of generating energy, the storage of that energy is a highly important topic, with new technologies in great demand. This book offers readers a range of potential options, maximizing the possibility for success. Several chapters offer overviews of the future of such systems and estimations of their feasibility. Forms of energy storage covered include electrochemical, compressed air and flywheel systems. Other techniques addressed are the use of single- and double-switch cell voltage equalizers and hybrid energy storage and applications. Dynamic energy storage methods are also covered by two chapters. Finally, there are contributions on a low-voltage DC system with storage and distributed generation interfaced systems, and the in-situ dynamic characterization of energy storage and conversion systems.

In a future with a higher renewable penetration, energy storage technologies will play an important role. They may, for example, use curtailed energy for arbitrage or supply ancillary services, help in relieving the grid congestion, and promote distributed generation. A techno-economic understanding and comparison between several electrical energy storage options is pursued as the main objective. Technologies with particular interest are: pumped hydropower storage, compressed air energy storage (CAES), several kinds of batteries (i.e. lead–acid, NaS, Li-ion), vanadium redox flow batteries, flywheels, capacitors and hydrogen. Special emphasis is put in the latest, as in a few years it may be one of the most suitable technologies for long term storage. After commenting these storage systems technically, an approach to ancillary services for southern California is made, considering them as a profitable use for energy storage technologies. Further life-cycle cost-benefit analysis of these electricity storage systems is done, taking into account several sources for cost data, providing an updated database for the cost elements (capital costs, operational and maintenance costs, and replacement costs).

Master's Thesis from the year 2024 in the subject Engineering - Chemical Engineering, grade: 10.0, , course: Chemical Engineering, language: English, abstract: Sustaining economic growth while reducing reliance on fossil fuels for environmental protection is a global challenge. Efforts are made to decrease energy utilization by enhancing energy efficiency and discovering clean, renewable energy sources. Cryogenic energy storage (CES) is a grid-scale energy system where electricity is stored in the form of liquefied air. It is regarded as a solution because it allows for increased electricity generation while also providing economic benefits by avoiding costly operational consequences. The three CES system configurations: standalone adiabatic, waste heat integration, and combustion integration were modelled and simulated in Aspen HYSY V8.8. Unlike in the conventional CES, Dowtherm-Q was used as the thermal fluid due to its thermal stability, non-corrosiveness, and high temperature resistance. The results indicated that the higher the adiabatic efficiency of the turbine, the greater the power generated; also, increasing the turbine inlet temperature enhanced the performance of the system configuration by lowering the pressure and increasing the power of the turbine. The economic analysis revealed that the waste heat-based system has both the lowest operating cost, capital cost, utility cost, and higher energy savings. Waste heat integration produces the most power (653.70 KW) and saves the most energy (69.58%), with lower capital costs, operating costs, and utility costs due to the increased adiabatic efficiency of the turbine. It implies that CES with waste heat integration is economically more promising compared to adiabatic standalone and the integration of combustion.

"Renewable energies, such as wind and solar, are a growing piece of global energy consumption. The chief motivation to develop renewable energy is two-fold: reducing carbon dioxide emissions and reducing dependence on diminishing fossil fuel supplies. Energy storage is critical to the growth of renewable energy because it allows for renewably-generated electricity to be consumed at times when renewable sources are unavailable, and it also enhances power quality (maintaining voltage and frequency) on an electric grid which becomes increasingly unstable as more renewable energy is added. There are numerous means of storing energy with different advantages, but none has emerged as the clear solution of choice for renewable energy storage. This thesis attempts to explore the current and developing state of energy storage and how it can be efficiently implemented with crystalline silicon solar photovotlaics, which has a minimum expected lifetime of 25 years assumed in this thesis. A method of uniformly comparing vastly different energy storage technologies using empirical data was proposed. Energy storage technologies were compared based on both economic valuation over the system life and cradle-to-gate pollution rates for systems with electrochemical batteries. For stationary, non-space-constrained settings, lead-acid batteries proved to be the most economical. Carbon-enhanced lead-acid batteries were competitive, showing promise as an energy storage technology. Lithium-ion batteries showed the lowest pollution rate of electrochemical batteries examined, but both lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries produce comparable carbon dioxide to coal-derived electricity."--Abstract, page iii.

Secondly, the feasibility of Zn-air and Al-air battery technologies was evaluated using techno-economic analysis. Three important cell performance parameters were studied to understand their sensitivity towards the levelized cost of storage of the metal-air batteries in comparison to existing Li-ion technology. Technologies such as Zn-air batteries was found to require collective improvements in all three cell performance parameters (areal capacity, cycle life, and efficiency) to be competitive with existing solutions like Li-ion battery.

With the growing demand for electricity, renewable sources of energy have garnered a lot of support from all quarters. The problem with depending on these renewable sources is that the output from them is independent of the demand. Storage of electricity gives us an opportunity to effectively manage and balance the supply and demand of electricity. Fuel cells are a fast developing and market capturing technology that presents efficient means of storing electricity in the form of hydrogen. The aim of this research is to study the impact of integrating hydrogen fuel cell storage system with a wind farm to improve the reliability of the grid for allowing higher penetration of renewable energy sources in the power system. The installation of energy storage systems strongly depends on the economic viability of the storage system. We identified four types of fuel cells that could be used in a hydrogen fuel cell storage system. We bring together a range of estimates for each of the fuel cell systems for the economic analysis that is targeted towards the total capital costs and the total annualized costs for the storage system for individual applications like rapid reserve and load shifting. We performed sensitivity analysis to determine the effect of varying the rate of interest and cost of fuel cell on the total annualized cost of the storage system. Finally, we compared the costs of hydrogen based storage system with other storage technologies like flywheel, pumped hydro, CAES and batteries for the individual application cases.

As a promising approach for sustainable development, distributed energy systems have received increasing attention worldwide and have become a key topic explored by researchers in the areas of building energy systems and smart grid. In line with this research trend, this dissertation presents a techno-economic analysis and optimization of distributed energy systems including combined heat and power (CHP), photovoltaics (PV), battery energy storage (BES), and thermal energy storage (TES) for commercial buildings. First, the techno-economic performance of the CHP system is analyzed and evaluated for four building types including hospital, large office, large hotel, and secondary school, located in different U.S. regions. The energy consumption of each building is obtained by EnergyPlus simulation software. The simulation models of CHP system are established for each building type. From the simulation results, the payback period (PBP) of the CHP system in different locations is calculated. The parameters that have an influence on the PBP of the CHP system are also analyzed. Second, PV system and integrated PV and BES (PV-BES) system are investigated for several commercial building types, respectively. The effects of the variation in key parameters, such as PV system capacity, capital cost of PV, sell back ratio, battery capacity, and capital cost of battery, on the performance of PV and/or PV-BES system are explored. Finally, subsystems in previous chapters (CHP, PV, and BES) along with TES system are integrated together based on a proposed control strategy to meet the electric and thermal energy demand of commercial buildings (i.e., hospital and large hotel). A multi-objective particle swarm optimization (PSO) is conducted to determine the optimal size of each subsystem with the objective to minimize the payback period and maximize the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Results reveal how the key factors affect the performance of distributed energy system and demonstrate the proposed optimization can be effectively utilized to obtain an optimized design of distributed energy systems that can get a tradeoff between the environmental and economic impacts for different buildings.
