Excerpt from Technological Discontinuities: The Emergence of Fiber Optics Prior descriptions of technological discontinuities by Utterback and Kim and by Tushman and Moore are restricted in their competitive sphere to a single attacker and a single defender. In reality, the situation is often much more complex, and the emerging technology can be perceived in many different ways by different industry participants. The purpose of this paper is to examine optical fibers as a technological discontinuity in an industry which has a complex structure. Clearly, competitive strategy has had an important role to play in the way in which industry participants have mastered technological change. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Innovations in optical fiber technology are revolutionizing world communications. Newly developed fiber amplifiers allow for direct transmission of highspeed signals over transcontinental distances without the need for electronic regeneration. Optical fibers find new applications in data processing. The impact of fiber materials, devices, and systems on communications in the coming decades will create an abundance of primary literature and the need for up-todate reviews. An optical fiber is a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly thicker than that of a human hair. A fiber optic cable consists of a bundle of glass threads, each of which is capable of transmitting messages modulated onto light waves. Optical fibers are used most often as a means to transmit light between the two ends of the fiber and find wide usage in fiber-optic communications, where they permit transmission over longer distances and at higher bandwidths (data rates) than wire cables. Fibers are used instead of metal wires because signals travel along them with lesser amounts of loss; in addition, fibers are also immune to electromagnetic interference, a problem from which metal wires suffer excessively. Fibers are also used for illumination, and are wrapped in bundles so that they may be used to carry images, thus allowing viewing in confined spaces, as in the case of a fiberscope. Specially designed fibers are also used for a variety of other applications, some of them being fiber optic sensors and fiber lasers. This book entitled Current Developments in Optical Fiber Technology is a compilation of works giving contemporary improvements and advancement in optical fiber technology related to the next generation optical communication, system and network, sensor, laser, measurement, characterization and devices.

Telephone, telefax, email and internet - the key ingredient of the inner workings is the conduit: the line which is designed to carry massive amounts of data at breakneck speed. In their data-carrying capacity optical fiber lines beat other technologies (copper cable, microwave beacons, satellite links) hands down, at least in the long haul. This book is a comprehensive source about optical fibers: Their structure, their light-guiding mechanism, their material and manufacture, their use. Several effects tend to degrade the signal as it travels down the fiber: they are spelled out in detail. Nonlinear processes are given due consideration for a twofold reason: On one hand they are fundamentally different from the more familiar processes in electrical cable. On the other hand, they form the basis of particularly interesting and innovative applications, provided they are understood well enough. A case in point is the use of so-called solitons, i.e. special pulses of light which have the wonderful property of being able to heal after perturbation. The book starts with the physical basics of ray and beam optics, explains fiber structure and the functions of optical elements, and continues to the forefront of applications. The state of the art of high speed data transmission will be described, and the use of fiber optic sensors in metrology is treated. The book is written in a pedagogical style so that students of both physics and electrical engineering, as well as technicians and engineers involved in optical technologies, will benefit.

The Rewiring of America: The Fiber Optics Revolution provides a comprehensive discussion on the progression of fiber optics technology in America. The book discusses several issues concerning the introduction of fiber optics, such as its history, the initial reaction of the public, applications, and possible future of the technology. The text first tackles the essential issues, specifically the history of fiber optics such as its birth, introduction to the public, popular opinions, and the challenges of its implementation. The book explains how several telecommunication corporations use such technology to its full potential to improve their services. Other industries such as computing and the military, which were exploring fiber optics, are also discussed along with applications to different fields, such as medicine, entertainment, transportation, and space exploration. The text also discusses the future of fiber optics, especially the role it will play in American society. The book will be of great use to any readers who are interested in information technology, communication engineering, and similar fields, especially those who are interested in American technology.
