Este libro se ha escrito para estudiantes que cursan la asignatura de Física en la enseñanza preuniversitaria. En él se desarrolla la física elemental necesaria para futuros estudiantes de Biología, Medicina, Física, Química, Ingeniería, etc... Los temas ordinarios de Física se desarrollan en el orden tradicional que encontramos en la mayoría de cursos preuniversitarios: Mecánica (capítulos 2 a 10), Termodinámica (capítulo 11 a 14), Vibraciones y Ondas, incluido el Sonido (capítulos 15 a 17), Electricidad y Magnetismo (capítulos 18 a 23), Óptica (capítulos 24 a 27) y Física moderna (capítulos 28 a 33). Aun cuando la ordenación de los temas es la normal, hay algunos aspectos que no suelen figurar en otros libros. En el capítulo 6, que trata de trabajo y energía, se incluye un apartado referente a energía térmica y metabolismo que relaciona el tema del capítulo con la experiencia cotidiana de los lectores. El capítulo 7 (impulso, cantidad de movimiento y centro de masa) contiene un apartado relativo a la propulsión a chorro y una descripción cualitativa del movimiento de un cohete. Hay todo un capítulo (capítulo 9) que trata de la gravedad, en el que se estudia el movimiento de los satélites y el problema del escape de la Tierra. El flujo viscoso se trata en el capítulo 10 y se escriben las ecuaciones del movimiento de un fluido, la conducción de calor y la conducción eléctrica en formas análogas a fin de poner de manifiesto sus semejanzas. El capítulo relativo al segundo principio de la Termodinámica (capítulo 14) relaciona la Entropía con la pérdida de energía disponible y con el desorden y la probabilidad. Los temas de Vibraciones y Ondas (capítulos 15 a 17) se dan a continuación de la Termodinámica y con ello se termina el primer semestre. No obstante, esta materia se podría combinar fácilmente con la Óptica (capítulos 24 a 27) y desarrollarse en clase antes o después de la Electricidad y el Magnetismo, si se creyera conveniente.
