The study reported in this document is a follow-up to earlier reviews of drugs and other youth problems. It addressed the current status of and the recent trends in teenage drug use, pregnancy, and dropping out of school, and the post-1987 research about the relationship between teenage drug use and either pregnancy or dropping out. Statistics from public and private agencies were evaluated to describe trends in basic rates of these behaviors. Although the data on teenage drug use displayed a downward trend, reporting problems and estimating errors hindered their interpretation. It seems unlikely that actual drug use has risen between 1979 and 1988 among youths overall, or among individual racial or ethnic groups. The 1985 data on teenage pregnancy indicated large disparities in the pregnancy, birth, and abortion rates for women 15 to 19 years of age, while nonWhite and Hispanic teenagers appeared much more likely to become pregnant. Research on dropouts indicated that teenagers were leaving school less frequently than in the past. Also, Black students had substantially decreased the gap between their dropout rates and those of White students. Hispanics and Native Americans continued to drop out of school at rates considerably higher than those of White or Black students.

Adolescent substance abuse is the nation's #1 public health problem. It originates out of a developmental era where experimentation with the world is increasingly taking place, and where major changes in physical self and social relationships are taking place. These changes cannot be understood by any one discipline nor can they be described by focusing only on the behavioral and social problems of this age period, the characteristics of normal development, or the pharmacology and addictive potential of specific drugs. They require knowledge of the brain's systems of reward and control, genetics, psychopharmacology, personality, child development, psychopathology, family dynamics, peer group relationships, culture, social policy, and more. Drawing on the expertise of the leading researchers in this field, this Handbook provides the most comprehensive summarization of current knowledge about adolescent substance abuse. The Handbook is organized into eight sections covering the literature on the developmental context of this life period, the epidemiology of adolescent use and abuse, similarities and differences in use, addictive potential, and consequences of use for different drugs; etiology and course as characterized at different levels of mechanistic analysis ranging from the genetic and neural to the behavioural and social. Two sections cover the clinical ramifications of abuse, and prevention and intervention strategies to most effectively deal with these problems. The Handbook's last section addresses the role of social policy in framing the problem, in addressing it, and explores its potential role in alleviating it.

What are illicit drugs? Why do people use them? What are the effects on the body of using drugs? Are some drugs more dangerous than others? What is addiction? Why are some people able to stop using drugs at will while others become addicted? Respected science author Magaret O. Hyde and Yale University School of Medicine physician John F. Setaro take a fresh approach to the problem of drug abuse among teens. This book looks at drugs and drug abuse honestly and realistically, from a review of the intoxicating and health effects of drugs to the war on drugs to the debate over legalization. The authors' straightforward descriptions of the physical, psychological, social, and legal effects of drug use will be highly informative to those teens in the process of making a decision of about drugs. The book will also benefit the one out of ten American teens who have already used drugs-and will be invaluable to the many for whom drugs have become a dependency. A self test for drug dependency and a list of website for organizations that can provide further information and assistance complete this practical, teen-friendly guide.
