Teeth grinding and clenching, also known as bruxism, is a very common issue that affects millions of children and adults in the United States. While it may seem like a harmless issue, grinding and clenching can result in serious issues for not only your oral health but also your overall health and wellbeing. In some cases, you may notice that you grind and clench your teeth during the day, but in most people, clenching your teeth at night while sleeping is the only time it occurs, so it may be difficult to tell if you are suffering from bruxism. This book aims to give a holistic understanding of teeth grinding and answers questions like: Why do we grind our teeth? How do you prevent bruxism? And what are simple exercises you can do to help release tension? Together we will go through the masticatory anatomy. We will talk about the connection between tension in the jaw and tension in other areas of your body, and how this contributes to TMJ tension. You will learn exercises including techniques from the yoga tradition and personal development tools to manage your stress. You will also learn about the physiology of stress. Finally, you will be immersed into the chakra system, a complementary approach to bruxism

“Bruxism” (Teeth Grinding or Clenching): Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Management. An Overview. characterized by clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or by bracing or thrusting of the mandible. There is no widely accepted definition of bruxism. The causes of bruxism are not completely understood, but probably involve multiple factors. Bruxism is a common behavior; reports of prevalence range from 8% to 31% in the general population. Several symptoms are commonly associated with Bruxism. Symptoms may be minimal, without patient awareness of the condition. There are two main types of Bruxism: 1. One occurs during sleep (Nocturnal bruxism) and 2. One during wakefulness (Awake bruxism). Awake bruxism is more common in women, whereas men and women are affected in equal proportions by sleep bruxism and is thought to have different causes from sleep bruxism. Several treatments are in use, although there is little evidence of robust efficacy for any particular treatment. Treatment modalities involve: · Occlusal correction, · Behavioral changes and · Pharmacological approach. An effort has been made in this E-Booklet to explicate elaboratively the causes, classification, diagnosis, management and various treatment modalities along with few illustrations and a table of comparison (Awake v/s Sleep Bruxism)to serve as a ready reference for this intriguing entity of Bruxism. This book is a practical guide for psychiatrists to use when treating patients for medical issues. Over the past 10-20 years, the number of medications prescribed for psychiatric illnesses has steadily increased, and psychiatric practitioners are frequently called upon to manage medical issues and side effects that result from psychotropic treatment. Covering a wide range of conditions from thyroid disorders to cardiac disease, this book is a helpful resource for understanding common adverse medical effects that occur when psychotropic drugs are administered. Presented in a practical format, each chapter discusses management of a particular medical problem or side effect and then provides a summary and flowchart of the major points highlighted in that chapter. Each chapter contains an overview of key medications causing a particular side effect. The book also includes special topics such as psychotropic prescribing in medical illness and tips on electrocardiographic interpretation. This easy-to-reference book aims to bridge the gap between medicine and psychiatry by elaborating on medical conditions seen in routine outpatient psychiatric practice. It serves as an invaluable tool for mental health providers, nurses, health educators, and pharmacologists alike.

“The reading of STRESS and ORALITY written by F. HARTMANN and G. CUCCHI led me to believe that we should consider the problem of certain migraines, neck pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue from a radically different angle than the historically traditional approach.” Pr Roger Guillemin (Nobel Laureate in Medicine) Are oral disorders only an issue for dentists? The answer is no. If your patients complain of pain and/or discomfort, if some are diagnosed as suffering from migraines, fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue, and if classical therapies have remained ineffective, this book could help in your daily practice. When it comes to the complex pathology called Temporo-Mandibular Disorders (TMD) most specialists favour a multidisciplinary approach and treatment of socio-psycho-emotional factors as well as dental, lingual or postural disorders. Yet little is known - from a clinical point of view - about a tricky oral spastic habit called severe teeth clenching. In view of the lack of clinical findings from classical investigations on the subject, it could be considered as the “hidden part of an oral parafunctional iceberg”. Neuroscience has been able to shed some light on the multiple connections between trigeminal and non-trigeminal nervous centres, which confirms the significant involvement of the stomatognathic system and trigeminal nerves (V) in both oral as well as non-oral major functions such as eating, breathing, speaking, hearing, and standing ... and also confirms the extensive participation of the paired Vs in the human adaptation process. Too many physicians are still reluctant to admit the pathological responsibilities of the Vs. Therefore their role remains largely underestimated by clinicians. Stress conditions in introverted people cause a parafunctional habit (i.e. severe clenching), which in turn produces trigeminal overstimulation and nociception. Through a process of sensitization this can perturb some non-trigeminal nervous areas, such as the vestibular nuclei and cerebellum (involved in equilibrium). Would you then be willing to accept the possibility that a stressed and introverted patient who clenches hard, durably or frequently may end up suffering from dizziness? If not, this book is not for you. But if you accept the scientific data and clinical facts this book will offer a concrete therapeutic protocol: the Relaxing and Moderating Treatment (RMT), which can greatly help you to familiarize yourself with and neutralize this little known deleterious spastic oral parafunction and its many disconcerting pain-causing and dysfunctional clinical effects. Prepare to be amazed by the results, just as we were!
