This book offers a new conceptual framework for reflecting on the role of information and communication technology in mathematics education. Discussion focuses on how computers, writing and oral discourse transform education at an epistemological as well as a political level. Building on examples, research and theory, the authors propose that knowledge is not constructed solely by humans, but by collectives of humans and technologies of intelligence.

Asylums written by Erving Goffman and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-08 with Social Science categories.

A total institution is defined by Goffman as a place of residence and work where a large number of like-situated, individuals, cut off from the wider society for an appreciable period of time, together lead an enclosed, formally administered round of life. Prisons serve as a clear example, providing we appreciate that what is prison-like about prisons is found in institutions whose members have broken no laws. This volume deals with total institutions in general and, mental hospitals, in particular. The main focus is, on the world of the inmate, not the world of the staff. A chief concern is to develop a sociological version of the structure of the self. Each of the essays in this book were intended to focus on the same issue--the inmate's situation in an institutional context. Each chapter approaches the central issue from a different vantage point, each introduction drawing upon a different source in sociology and having little direct relation to the other chapters. This method of presenting material may be irksome, but it allows the reader to pursue the main theme of each paper analytically and comparatively past the point that would be allowable in chapters of an integrated book. If sociological concepts are to be treated with affection, each must be traced back to where it best applies, followed from there wherever it seems to lead, and pressed to disclose the rest of its family.

Ecological Literacy written by David W. Orr and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-01-01 with Religion categories.

The most important discoveries of the 20th century exist not in the realm of science, medicine, or technology, but rather in the dawning awareness of the earth’s limits and how those limits will affect human evolution. Humanity has reached a crossroad where various ecological catastrophes meet what some call sustainable development. While a great deal of attention has been given to what governments, corporations, utilities, international agencies, and private citizens can do to help in the transition to sustainability, little thought has been given to what schools, colleges, and universities can do. Ecological Literacy asks how the discovery of finiteness affects the content and substance of education. Given the limits of the earth, what should people know and how should they learn it?

Ideology And Modern Culture written by John B. Thompson and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-02 with Social Science categories.

In this major new work, Thompson develops an original account of ideology and relates it to the analysis of culture and mass communication in modern Societies. Thompson offers a concise and critical appraisal of major contributions to the theory of ideology, from Marx and Mannheim, to Horkheimer, Adorno and Habermas. He argues that these thinkers - and social and political theorists more generally - have failed to deal adequately with the nature of mass communication and its role in the modern world. In order to overcome this deficiency, Thompson undertakes a wide-ranging analysis of the development of mass communication, outlining a distinctive social theory of the mass media and their impact.

Elementary Mathematics From An Advanced Standpoint written by Felix Klein and has been published by Cosimo, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-01 with Mathematics categories.

When the mathematician Felix Klein first went to university, he was surprised at just how little what he had learned up to that point was relevant to his new studies. Professors had their own interests, and these they conveyed without regard for the math students of the future that these prospective secondary schoolteachers would one day instruct. Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint was written to help remedy that problem. Though highly regarded as one of the finest mathematical minds of his day, Professor Klein took a great deal of interest in guiding teachers and "reducing the gap between the school and the university." Readers will come away impressed at the clarity of Klein's writing, and the ease with which he conveys complex mathematical ideas. Divided into three parts-arithmetic, algebra, and analysis-and covering such topics as complex numbers, real equations, and logarithmic and exponential functions, Klein's classic is essential reading for math instructors and students planning to become math instructors. German mathematician FELIX KLEIN (1849-1925), a great teacher and scientific thinker, significantly advanced the field of mathematical physics and made a number of profound discoveries in the field of geometry. His published works include Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint: Geometry and Famous Problems of Elementary Geometry.
