In Telling Flesh, Vicki Kirby addresses a major theoretical issue at the intersection of the social sciences and feminist theory -- the separation of nature from culture. Kirby focuses particularly on postmodern approaches to corporeality, and explores how these approaches confine the body within questions about meaning and interpretation. Kirby explores the implications of this containment in the work of Jane Gallop, Judith Butler, and Drucilla Cornell, as well as in recent cyber-criticism. By analysing the inadvertent repetition of the nature/culture division in this work, Kirby offers a powerful reassessment of dualism itself.

In the second half of the eighteenth century, celebrated Swiss physician Samuel Auguste Tissot (1728-1797) received over 1,200 medical consultation letters from across Europe and beyond. Written by individuals seeking respite from a range of ailments, these letters offer valuable insight into the nature of physical suffering. Plaintive, desperate, querulous, fearful, frustrated, and sometimes arrogant and self-interested in tone, the letters to Tissot not only express the struggle of individuals to understand the body and its workings, but also reveal the close connections between embodiment and politics. Through the process of writing letters to describe their ailments, the correspondents created textual versions of themselves, articulating identities shaped by their physical experiences. Using these identities and experiences as examples, Sonja Boon argues that the complaints voiced in the letters were intimately linked to broader social and political discourses of citizenship in the late eighteenth century, a period beset with concerns about depopulation, moral depravity, and corporeal excess, and organized around intricate rules of propriety. Contributing to the fields of literary criticism, history, gender and sexuality studies, and history of medicine, Telling the Flesh establishes a compelling argument about the connections between health, politics, and identity.

Many will not admit that they do not have a problem with putting their flesh in subjection, to the Spirit of God. Many will not admit that their flesh is weak and disobedient at times. The truth is that every Christian must learn to put their flesh into subjection to Gods Spirit. One of the most important things a child of God must learn, is to tell their Flesh, to lay down, why, our fleshly thinking is weak, we all get our strength from God alone, this is becoming grounded and rooted in things that are spiritual. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the Law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. God wants to get across to the church of Jesus Christ, many things concerning, our flesh, our fleshly thinking, because it gets in the way at times, in our service and relationship with God. Many of Gods children do not even realize or know it. Yet this book will tell secrets, of the devils little bag of spiritual tricks. To expose Satan's habits that Christians need to learn to lay down, in your walk with God. Here is a small but a good little list of things that is about our flesh that truly does get in the way, with our walk with God and many of Gods children do not even realize it at all, for many in the body of Christ. These things even stagger many of Gods people and slow their walk down with God. These things even rob Gods children of many blessings and they are not even aware of it, because of spiritual blinders.· This flesh is disobedient.· It is stubborn.· It is in denial.· It is lazy.· It makes up excuses. These things will rob you of spiritual growth, of spiritual understanding, of spiritual blessings of many. They will also keep you from learning the truth of Gods will for your life and many things that God desires at many times, to discern or reveal unto you, as a hearer of his Spirit. Yet the flesh will make up every excuse, to say no, when Gods Spirit ask you to go and pray. This flesh is disobedient, stubborn, and lazy and makes up excuses, why you cannot go and pray, when the Holy Spirit, places it in your minds thoughts and in your spirit, to do so. This is why this teaching is so vital unto every Christians walk with God. You see it is up to us as a child of God to see the spiritual pattern that many Christians, truly do have and they are spiritually, weak, not gifted, blind to many spiritual truths, will not pray or read Gods word and many skip out of church and many are under nourished spiritually. Because of these spiritual truths, many have never grown to know, who the Holy Spirit is in their life and many have not learned his voice and the Holy Spirit cannot lead them into all truth, which his ministry does in a believer's life. These things are spiritually stunting the growth of Gods children. These things are stopping many from learning the truths that God, has always desired to reveal unto the bride of Jesus Christ, us his beloved. It is up to you personally to say to your flesh, lay down. What I'm really saying with this statement is that it is all up to you to become, obedient to the voice of God. When the Holy Spirit asks you to go and pray and to yield to your heavenly language of tongues and when God asks you to read his written word, and to give to someone or to a ministry, these are spiritual hints to obey Gods Spirit and his promptings, as he give them unto you. The Holy Spirit has a reason why that he is asking you to do these things. It is up to you to learn to become faithful and obedient to the voice and leading's of Gods Spirit, when he ministers things unto you. In your not realizing it, he is trying to teach you to become a hearer of his Spirit. He is trying to teach you to hear spiritually and to lead you into times of prayer and bible readings, for you to follow his promptings at all times, when he gives them unto you. You're in spiritual training and many miss it all together and do not even know it.

Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans—though no one calls them that anymore. His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the “Transition.” Now, eating human meat—“special meat”—is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing. Then one day he’s given a gift: a live specimen of the finest quality. Though he’s aware that any form of personal contact is forbidden on pain of death, little by little he starts to treat her like a human being. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost—and what might still be saved.

Crucify Mr Flesh. Why is this very instructive? It is instructive to us because we are flesh and blood, and we have this inherent weakness called the flesh. To crucify is to criticize severely and unrelentingly. When something has become severe, that means the thing is harsh. So, crucify is not a mild word. To crucify is a harsh kind of death than when they stone someone; I'm not saying it's not a gruesome death, but I don't think the extent of it is as the person who is alive, and you are nailing the leg, you are nailing the hand, and you are crucifying Him. It is harsh; it is difficult. I'm not saying flesh has your way, but I'm saying flesh, you are alive, I know it, but I'm going to nail you. Flesh, you are alive, I know it, but I will bind you. Flesh, you are alive, I know it, but I'm going to set you on fire or ablaze. Flesh, you are alive, and I know it, but I will criticize you severely and unrelentingly; I won't stop. If you read Galatians chapter 5:16-26 very carefully, We have been shown that the flesh has a defensive position against the Spirit. When the Spirit is the ruling party, the flesh will always be in opposition. And the Spirit against the flesh, so when the flesh is the ruling party, the Spirit will always stand in opposition. And these are contrary to one another. So, the Spirit is standing the other way when the flesh is standing this way. You cannot bring agreement between the flesh and the Spirit. The flesh and the Spirit are not always in the same party. Flesh is always at another party, while the Spirit is always at another party. So, we must understand that they are contrary to one another. 'So that you do not do the things that you wish.' So, this tells us that, as a believer, you don't think you are to do what you wish. Like saying, I feel like smoking; it is not you, but the flesh; you are fulfilling the lust of the flesh. I feel like having a boy or girlfriend for sexual pleasure; you are fulfilling the lust of the flesh. As a believer, you can't do what you wish; a party directs your affairs with their ideologies and philosophy. So, it is either you are in the party of the flesh or you are in the party of the Spirit. If you are in the party of the flesh, you will fulfill the lust of the flesh. If you are in the party of the Spirit, the desires of the Spirit, you will do. The Bible says that God works in us both to will and to do for His good pleasure, so you are not doing what you wish. Don't ever think you are in charge. Please don't say it is my life: it is not valid. One is living that life through you, either the flesh or the Spirit. So, never think you are in charge; 'I am the one running things'; you are running nothing. Either Mr. Flesh is running things for you, or the Holy Spirit is running it. One party is running it for you. I'm not saying this out of my head; this is Scripture! Beloved, to genuinely walk with Christ, you must crucify Mr. Flesh!

Is the reform we have seen in the wake of the pedophilia scandals in the Catholic Church meaningful? Have our conversations about the causes of these scandals delved as deeply as they need to? For those questioning the relations between hierarchical power, secrecy, and sexuality in institutional religion, Mark D. Jordan's eloquent meditations on what truths about sexuality need to be told in church-and the difficulty of telling any truths-will be a balm and a revelation.

In 2 Corinthians 12: 7 Paul makes the extraordinary admission that he was given a 'thorn in the flesh'. Although we can never be sure what that torment was, many of us will know what it feels like to experience a painful problem which does not seem to go away. In this book R. T. Kendall explains what a thorn in the flesh is, why we have it, and what we should understand by it. Looking with compassion at the kinds of acute situation in which we may find ourselves - an unhappy marriage, difficult working conditions, loneliness, sexual misgivings or chronic illness, for example - he shows how the grace of God is sufficient whatever our thorn, and how it can lead us into unimaginable intimacy with Jesus.

“[A] brilliant and provocative work . . . demonstrating the centrality of the flesh to the mysteries and doctrines of the Christian faith.” —Carol Zaleski, Smith College A sustained and systematic theological reflection on the idea that being a Christian is, first and last, a matter of the flesh, Christian Flesh shows us what being a Christian means for fleshly existence. Depicting and analyzing what the Christian tradition has to say about the flesh of Christians in relation to that of Christ, the book shows that some kinds of fleshly activity conform well to being a Christian, while others are in tension with it. But to lead a Christian life is to be unconstrained by ordinary ethical norms. Arguing that no particular case of fleshly activity is forbidden, Paul J. Griffiths illustrates his message through extended case studies of what it is for Christians to eat, to clothe themselves, and to engage in physical intimacy. “In this trenchant and careful theological treatment of our embodiment, Paul Griffiths puts the stress exactly where it should be put––on the possibility of transfigured touch. By focusing on the varieties of touch, he is able to untangle several unfortunate arguments between liberals and conservatives in a most refreshing way.” —John Milbank, University of Nottingham “Very few theologians can boast a comparable combination of profound questioning and precise reasoning. This is a book worthy of the most serious reflection, debate, and admiration.” —David Bentley Hart, Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study “Supremely lucid and beautifully austere.” —Evan Sandsmark, Modern Theology “A model of well-reasoned, stimulating and enduring theology.” —R. David Nelson, International Journal of Systematic Theology
