Wendell Berry thinks of himself as a storyteller. It’s somewhat ironic then that he is better known as an essayist, a poet, and an advocate for small farmers. The essays in this collection consider the many facets of Berry’s life and work, but they focus on his efforts as a novelist and story writer. Indeed, Berry had already published three novels before his seminal work of cultural criticism, The Unsettling of America, established him as an ardent defender of local communities and sustainable agriculture. And over the past fifty years, he has published eight novels and more than forty-eight short stories set in the imagined community of Port William. His exquisite rendering of this small Kentucky town challenges us to see the beauty of our own places and communities and to tend their health, threatened though it inevitably is. The twelve contributors to this collection approach Berry’s fiction from a variety of perspectives—literary studies, journalism, theology, history, songwriting—to shed light on its remarkable ability to make a good life imaginable and compelling. The first collection devoted to Berry’s fiction, this volume insists that any consideration of Berry’s work must begin with his stories. A New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Children's Book of 2022 ★ Everyone knows how "Little Red Riding Hood" goes. But Grandpa keeps getting the story all wrong, with hilarious results! "Once upon a time, there was a little girl called Little Yellow Riding Hood—" "Not yellow! It's Red Riding Hood!" So begins the story of a grandpa playfully recounting the well-known fairytale—or his version, at least—to his granddaughter. Try as she might to get him back on track, Grandpa keeps on adding things to the mix, both outlandish and mundane! The end result is an unpredictable tale that comes alive as it's being told, born out of imaginative play and familial affection. This spirited picture book will surprise and delight from start to finish, while reminding readers that storytelling is not only a creative act of improvisation and interaction, but also a powerful pathway for connection and love. Telling Stories Wrong was written by Gianni Rodari, widely regarded as the father of modern Italian children's literature. It exemplifies his great respect for the intelligence of children and the kind of work he did as an educator, developing numerous games and exercises for children to engage and think beyond the status quo, imagining what happens after the end of a familiar story, or what possibilities open up when a new ingredient is introduced. This book is illustrated with great affection by the illustrious artist Beatrice Alemagna (Child of Glass), who counts Gianni Rodari as one of her "spiritual fathers."

The compelling, groundbreaking guide to creative writing that reveals how the brain responds to storytelling Stories shape who we are. They drive us to act out our dreams and ambitions and mold our beliefs. Storytelling is an essential part of what makes us human. So, how do master storytellers compel us? In The Science of Storytelling, award-winning writer and acclaimed teacher of creative writing Will Storr applies dazzling psychological research and cutting-edge neuroscience to our myths and archetypes to show how we can write better stories, revealing, among other things, how storytellers—and also our brains—create worlds by being attuned to moments of unexpected change. Will Storr’s superbly chosen examples range from Harry Potter to Jane Austen to Alice Walker, Greek drama to Russian novels to Native American folk tales, King Lear to Breaking Bad to children’s stories. With sections such as “The Dramatic Question,” “Creating a World,” and “Plot, Endings, and Meaning,” as well as a practical, step-by-step appendix dedicated to “The Sacred Flaw Approach,” The Science of Storytelling reveals just what makes stories work, placing it alongside such creative writing classics as John Yorke’s Into the Woods: A Five-Act Journey into Story and Lajos Egri’s The Art of Dramatic Writing. Enlightening and empowering, The Science of Storytelling is destined to become an invaluable resource for writers of all stripes, whether novelist, screenwriter, playwright, or writer of creative or traditional nonfiction.

Storytelling How To Tell Amazing Stories And Inspire Your Audience "The audience was absolutely enthralled by the public speaker's story. His performance had them spellbound. They were captivated." To understand the incredible power wielded by an effective public speaker, look no further than the language we use to describe one's effect."Enthralling." "Spellbinding." "Captivating." Some would even go so far as to call a talented speaker hypnotic, and that's probably much closer to the mark than the average person realizes. A good performance doesn't merely command an onlooker's attention. It also takes the reigns of their emotional state. It also seizes hold of their imagination-and by extension of that: their sense of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. An inspiring story stays with the listener long after it's been told. It churns on in their gray matter. Lays eggs in their subconscious. Echoes through their identity. But surely, orators capable of doing that are born, not made? Right? We can't all be blessed with that kind of charisma. Right?Wrong. The ability to make an impression on an audience is a skill that can be learned, developed, and perfected. This book will teach you how to do it. Here is a preview of what you'll learn: How to structure your spoken stories for maximum interest and impact. How to color your speech with imagery that commands subconscious investment . How to appeal to your audience's imagination for a performance that they'll never forget ...and much, much more in this concise, no-nonsense guide to effective public speaking and storytelling.

"It enters on a mission of cheerfulness that has our best wishes...The art of storytelling is one of the most delightful accomplishments. Miss Bryant's book shall increase the interest in cultivating it." -The Unitarian Register "She is an expert on the likes and dislikes of small boys and girls." -The Christian Advocate "An attractive, handy-sized book which will be very interesting to all teachers and mothers. Miss Bryant is uncommonly well qualified to explain this art to others by virtue of her long experience as a teller of stories to audiences of young people and as a lecturer upon methods to their elders. How Miss Bryant appeals to her hearers is evidenced by one rather unusual experience. Her first professional engagement was with a large club in the suburbs of Boston, by whom she was very happily received. The next season she was engaged again - and also the following. Finally, the club made a practice of voting, at the annual meeting, 'to have Miss Bryant next year.' Other engagements of a similar sort have been in many places in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and Maryland. In most of these states, too, Miss Bryant has spoken before state institutes and teachers clubs." -The Interior "A very clever presentation of the psychology of the art of telling a story. The book contains many suitable stories which will serve the purpose both of entertainment and education, and shows how to adapt to different grades of children's intelligence the stories which are too long or too difficult." -Publishers Weekly "Suggestive to mothers and teachers. Many sample stories are included." -The Outlook "Will guide the inexperienced into the art of storytelling." -The PTA Magazine "Every teacher who can tell a story has in her possession a magic wand by which inattention may be overcome, quiet restored or won, lessons sent home to hearts and minds, conscience stimulated and character built. Every teacher may learn to tell a story....How to Tell Stories to Children will give a basis for study. Then practice and more practice, with the frank criticism of other teachers, will develop the art. To gain the ability to tell a story well is worth real sacrifice on the part of any teacher. Can you make little faces glow with pleasure, eyes open wide with interest and grow serious over the victory or defeat of the story children? To be able to do it is worth the price you may have to pay." -The Church School Journal CONTENTS INTRODUCTION CHAPTER I THE PURPOSE OF STORY-TELLING IN SCHOOL CHAPTER II SELECTION OF STORIES TO TELL CHAPTER III ADAPTATION OF STORIES FOR TELLING CHAPTER IV HOW TO TELL THE STORY CHAPTER V SOME SPECIFIC SCHOOLROOM USES STORIES SELECTED AND ADAPTED FOR TELLING ESPECIALLY FOR KINDERGARTEN AND CLASS I.
