Tra l’universo discorsivo − teorico, critico, storico − e quello fisico − materiale, spaziale, costruttivo − dell’architettura, la rappresentazione è chiamata a svolgere un fondamentale ruolo di raccordo, garantendo simultaneamente una doppia funzionalità: nella direzione ermeneutica ed in quella euristica. Nell’analizzarne le diverse articolazioni, il libro si propone di costruirne e descriverne i fondamenti ed i modi di appartenenza ai processi della progettazione e della documentazione critica. La rappresentazione dell’architettura si costruisce quindi quale momento essenziale nella determinazione della sua «forma» architettonica e nelle relazioni che questa instaura con l’abitare, le geometrie, e le strutture epistemologiche e poetiche del pensiero. Oltre alla nozione di forma, alla mίmesis ed alle sottili questioni che questa solleva in campo architettonico, póiesis e tékhne sono infatti i principali strumenti concettuali di riferimento che il libro discute e pone alla base della rappresentazione, nel suo aspetto di luogo privilegiato di formazione del progetto e della documentazione critica.

Il volume raccoglie le considerazioni e le ricerche che hanno fatto da riferimento teorico-operativo a esperienze indirizzate prevalentemente al rinnovamento della didattica della rappresentazione dell’architettura. È ormai un dato da tempo accertato che il digitale ha quasi del tutto soppiantato le tradizionali pratiche del disegno nel processo di elaborazione del progetto di architettura. Ma non è altrettanto definito il suo ruolo nella didattica della rappresentazione, non solo per lo studio dei modelli geometrici, ma anche per l’analisi dei modelli architettonici così come si possono costruire sulla base dello studio degli elaborati di progetto. Le sperimentazioni didattiche condotte negli ultimi anni su casi di studio emblematici hanno permesso di mettere a punto una strategia coerente con l’intenzione di rivedere, alla luce delle continue innovazioni indotte dal digitale, gli statuti disciplinari del rapporto disegno/progetto. Per l’approfondimento del rapporto oggi sempre più stretto della rappresentazione con la pratica del progetto è stato determinante esaminare, a scopo esemplificativo, l’operatività progettuale di alcuni fra i principali interpreti del rinnovamento del linguaggio architettonico in Italia a cavallo degli anni Sessanta e Settanta del Novecento.

[Italiano]: In un momento così significativo per la storia europea e mondiale, questo volume vuole essere la raccolta di riflessioni scientifiche condotte sui rapporti tra le scelte politiche, le azioni militari e la fisionomia delle città e del paesaggio urbano, sull’evoluzione delle strutture e delle tecniche di difesa, sulla rappresentazione della guerra e dei suoi effetti sull’immagine urbana, sul recupero delle tracce della memoria cittadina. Da una parte il campo delle Digital Humanities apre nuove prospettive per studiare l'immagine della città prima, durante e dopo la guerra, dall’altro le tecnologie digitali impegnano studiosi e ricercatori di varie discipline: in particolare nell’ambito del disegno viene esplorato il ruolo della rappresentazione nella formulazione dei progetti urbani di difesa e nella documentazione degli eventi bellici e delle tracce lasciate dai conflitti, mentre nell’ambito del restauro vengono approfondite le sfide teoriche e pratiche imposte dai danni arrecati dai conflitti ai centri storici, passando in rassegna casi studio, soluzioni e dibattiti relativi alla conservazione del patrimonio urbano coinvolto in azioni di guerra, con un'attenzione particolare all'identità e alla memoria collettiva./[English]: At such a significant moment in European and world history, this volume aims to be a collection of scientific reflections about the relationships between political choices, military actions and the physiognomy of cities and the urban landscape, about the evolution of defence structures and techniques, about the representation of war and its effects on the urban image, and about the recovery of the traces of city memory. On the one hand the field of Digital Humanities opens up new perspectives to study the image of the city before, during and after the war, on the other hand digital technologies engage academics and researchers from various disciplines: In particular, in the area of drawing, the role of representation in the formulation of urban defence projects and in the documentation of wartime events and the traces left behind by conflicts is explored, while in the area of conservation, the theoretical and practical challenges imposed by the damage caused by conflicts to historic centres are explored, reviewing case studies, solutions and debates relating to the conservation of urban heritage involved in wartime actions, with a focus on identity and collective memory.

Questo libro è la prima edizione dell'esito dell'attività di ricerca svolta dall'autore a seguito della sua partecipazione all'XI Ciclo del Dottorato di Ricerca in Progettazione Architettonica e Urbana presso il Politecnico di Milano conclusasi nel dicembre del 1999. Il testo indaga i modi in cui la rappresentazione planimetrica possa essere considerata come una tecnica descrittiva che si colloca tra l'attività analitica, lettura ed interpretazione della realtà, ed il progetto, fondato sulla rielaborazione di precisi temi formali. La premessa che sottende la ricerca assegna al progetto un duplice carattere: quello di essere, allo stesso tempo, strumento di analisi e procedimento logico compositivo. This book explores the relationship between the sciences of representation and the strategy of landscape valorisation. The topic is connected to the theme of the image of the city, which is extended to the territory scale and applied to case studies in Italy’s Umbria region, where the goal is to strike a dynamic balance between cultural heritage and nature. The studies demonstrate how landscape represents an interpretive process of finding meaning, a product of the relationships between mankind and the places in which it lives. The work proceeds from the assumption that it is possible to describe these connections between environment, territory and landscape by applying the Vitruvian triad, composed of Firmitas (solidity), Utilitas (utility) and Venustas(beauty). The environment, the sum of the conditions that influence all life, represents the place’s solidity, because it guarantees its survival. In turn, territory is connected to utility, and through its etymological meaning is linked to possession, to a domain; while landscape, as an “area perceived by people”, expresses the search for beauty in a given place, the process of critically interpreting a vision.
