È la metà di marzo quando durante una mareggiata il commissario Antonio Mariani assiste al recupero del corpo nudo di una giovane donna. Non è necessario essere un anatomopatologo per capire che la causa del decesso non è l’annegamento ma la profonda ferita dalla base del collo all’inguine. Nei giorni precedenti erano stati trovati i corpi di altre due donne, decedute a causa di ferite analoghe. Le vittime, occasionalmente, facevano sesso a pagamento: questa notizia aveva suscitato l’interesse dei media; già si parlava di un serial killer delle prostitute e Mariani sa che questo terzo delitto rafforzerà l’ipotesi. Il commissario si concentra soprattutto sui dettagli che rendono questo omicidio diverso dai precedenti. Il corpo è stato ritrovato in mare, gli altri due no. Ma il dato discordante più significativo è la vita di questa terza vittima: Valeria Cottini era una giovane ricercatrice universitaria con un promettente futuro, perché era in corso di pubblicazione un suo saggio sulla prostituzione nella Genova del Quattrocento. Eppure, non si può escludere che sia stata vittima del “killer delle prostitute”. L’indagine è resa più complicata dai pessimi rapporti fra il commissario e l’ispettore Paciani che è convinto di avere di fronte un “serial killer delle prostitute” e che tutte le ricerche di Mariani siano soltanto un modo per disturbare e infangare persone influenti. Ma Antonio continua a scavare nella vita delle vittime. Maria Masella è nata a Genova. Ha partecipato varie volte al Mystfest di Cattolica ed è stata premiata in due edizioni (1987 e 1988). Sempre con la Clessidra è uscito nel 1999 il romanzo poliziesco Per sapere la verità. La Giuria del XXVIII Premio “Gran Giallo Città di Cattolica” (edizione 2001) ha segnalato un suo racconto La parabola dei ciechi, inserito successivamente nell’antologia Liguria in giallo e nero (Fratelli Frilli Editori, 2006). Il questore ha chiesto al commissario Antonio Mariani di indagare su alcune lettere minatorie indirizzate a Claudio Corani, noto imprenditore genovese e unico proprietario della C&C. Non è un incarico, ma un “favore personale”. Mariani accantona l’irritazione e incontra Alberta, la moglie di Corani, perché è stata lei a rivolgersi al questore. Sente anche Stefania Costanzi, la segretaria dell’imprenditore, che è stata la prima a leggerle. Sembra che le minacce siano la conseguenza di un incidente in cui, nell’autunno, ha perso la vita Franco Ratto, un giovane camionista appena assunto. Inutilmente Mariani cerca di parlare con Corani: l’uomo è irreperibile da giorni. Insiste con Alberta perché sporga regolare denuncia, ma lei risponde che quelle assenze non sono inusuali. Che una moglie non si chieda dove va il marito per giorni sembra strano al commissario, come il fatto che un imprenditore possa assentarsi trascurando i propri affari. Due giorni dopo Corani viene trovato ucciso a Sampierdarena: gli hanno sparato alla nuca. Due volte. Non è l’unica stranezza: gli indumenti della vittima non sono adeguati alla sua condizione sociale, il corpo è stato rinvenuto vicino alla torre WTC, dove ha gli uffici la C&C. L’indagine, all’inizio irritante, per Mariani diventa inquietante e risveglia troppi ricordi umani e professionali. The Trotula was the most influential compendium on women's medicine in medieval Europe. Scholarly debate has long focused on the traditional attribution of the work to the mysterious Trotula, said to have been the first female professor of medicine in eleventh- or twelfth-century Salerno, just south of Naples, then the leading center of medical learning in Europe. Yet as Monica H. Green reveals in her introduction to this first edition of the Latin text since the sixteenth century, and the first English translation of the book ever based upon a medieval form of the text, the Trotula is not a single treatise but an ensemble of three independent works, each by a different author. To varying degrees, these three works reflect the synthesis of indigenous practices of southern Italians with the new theories, practices, and medicinal substances coming out of the Arabic world. Arguing that these texts can be understood only within the intellectual and social context that produced them, Green analyzes them against the background of historical gynecological literature as well as current knowledge about women's lives in twelfth-century southern Italy. She examines the history and composition of the three works and introduces the reader to the medical culture of medieval Salerno from which they emerged. Among her findings is that the second of the three texts, "On the Treatments for Women," does derive from the work of a Salernitan woman healer named Trota. However, the other two texts—"On the Conditions of Women" and "On Women's Cosmetics"—are probably of male authorship, a fact indicating the complex gender relations surrounding the production and use of knowledge about the female body. Through an exhaustive study of the extant manuscripts of the Trotula, Green presents a critical edition of the so-called standardized Trotula ensemble, a composite form of the texts that was produced in the mid-thirteenth century and circulated widely in learned circles. The facing-page complete English translation makes the work accessible to a broad audience of readers interested in medieval history, women's studies, and premodern systems of medical thought and practice.
