Beginning with the first Jewish settler, Moses David, the important role that Windsor Jews played in the development of Ontario's south is mirrored in this 200-year chronicle. the founding pioneer families transformed their Eastern European shtetl into a North American settlement; many individuals were involved in establishing synagogues, schools, and an organized communal structure in spite of divergent religious, political, and economic interests. Modernity and the growing influences of Zionism and Conservative/Reform Judaism challenged the traditional and leftist leanings of the community's founders. From the outset, Jews were represented in city council, actively involved in communal organizations, and appointed to judicial posts. While its Jewish population was small, Windsor boasted Canada's first Jewish Cabinet members, provincially and federally, in David Croll and Herb Gray. As the new millennium approached, jews faced shrinking numbers, forcing major consolidations in order to ensure their survival.

Pegasus Devocatus written by Harry C. Schnur and has been published by Leuven University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Back in 1963, when a conference on Horace was organised at Oudpelgeest (The Netherlands), Harry C. Schnur chose to comment upon Horace's famous poem Exegi monumentum aere perennius. Not unlike the Roman poet, Schnur was driven by one of mankind's strongest stimuli, the craving for immortality. No doubt the same attitude of mind made him meticulously keep together every possible line written by, or concerning, himself: copies of articles, books, translations, notes for his courses, poems, letters to editors of newspapers, files with clippings, were all for him more treasured than incunabula, rare books or precious furniture. Wartime conditions and a great many removals from Germany to England, thence to Holland, back again to England, thence to the U.S.A., back to Germany and then finally to the safe harbour of Switzerland, caused the loss of some book-cases, which left his collection incomplete, but still very impressive.

A Separate Circle written by Wendy Lowe Besmann and has been published by Univ. of Tennessee Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with History categories.

"An insightful and well-written book. One of the best studies of local Jewish history extant."--Leonard Dinnerstein, University of Arizona For more than a century and a half, the Jewish citizens of the area in and around Knoxville, Tennessee, have maintained the rituals and traditions that define them as a separate people, even as they have blended quietly with their non-Jewish neighbors. Wendy Lowe Besmann paints a vivid picture of this community, bringing alive the stories of merchants, grocers, immigrants from Eastern Europe, and scientists and university professionals who have come to call the area home. Drawing on interviews and other sources, she traces the growth of local synagogues, explores the role of Jewish community centers, looks at how children were shaped by school and Temple life, and even recalls the community's summer vacations at nearby Neubert Springs. With broad historical sweep, Besmann examines what life was like for Knoxville's early Jewish community and how the events of their lives were affected by American expansion and depression, by social upheaval and urban migration. Successive waves of immigrants, from the traveling peddlers of the late nineteenth century to the doctors, lawyers, and engineers of the late twentieth, have both adapted to the culture of East Tennessee and shaped it in subtle ways. As they did in cities all over the South, Knoxville's Jewish population followed jobs, meaning that most of them did not grow up in the region. Besmann looks at topics as diverse as patterns of chain migration, the role of Jewish merchants in the Civil War, and the contributions of a Jewish-owned music store to the career of Elvis Presley. She describes the vital role of ritual and celebration in the community, from the importance placed on religious education to the songs played at bar mitzvahs. The Author: Wendy Lowe Besmann is a freelance writer whose work has been published in The New York Times, USA Today, The Atlantic, Self, and Better Homes & Gardens. She lives in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

A Kosher Christmas written by Joshua Eli Plaut and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-24 with Social Science categories.

Christmas is not everybody’s favorite holiday. Historically, Jews in America, whether participating in or refraining from recognizing Christmas, have devised a multitude of unique strategies to respond to the holiday season. Their response is a mixed one: do we participate, try to ignore the holiday entirely, or create our own traditions and make the season an enjoyable time? This book, the first on the subject of Jews and Christmas in the United States, portrays how Jews are shaping the public and private character of Christmas by transforming December into a joyous holiday season belonging to all Americans. Creative and innovative in approaching the holiday season, these responses range from composing America’s most beloved Christmas songs, transforming Hanukkah into the Jewish Christmas, creating a national Jewish tradition of patronizing Chinese restaurants and comedy shows on Christmas Eve, volunteering at shelters and soup kitchens on Christmas Day, dressing up as Santa Claus to spread good cheer, campaigning to institute Hanukkah postal stamps, and blending holiday traditions into an interfaith hybrid celebration called “Chrismukkah” or creating a secularized holiday such as Festivus. Through these venerated traditions and alternative Christmastime rituals, Jews publicly assert and proudly proclaim their Jewish and American identities to fashion a universally shared message of joy and hope for the holiday season. Jewish Consumer Cultures In Nineteenth And Twentieth Century Europe And North America written by Paul Lerner and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-22 with History categories.

This book investigates the place and meaning of consumption in Jewish lives and the roles Jews played in different consumer cultures in modern Europe and North America. Drawing on innovative, original research into this new and challenging field, the volume brings Jewish studies and the history and theory of consumer culture into dialogue with each other. Its chapters explore Jewish businesspeople's development of niche commercial practices in several transnational contexts; the imagining, marketing, and realization of a Jewish national homeland in Palestine through consumer goods and strategies; associations between Jews, luxury, and gender in multiple contexts; and the political dimensions of consumer choice. Together the essays in this volume show how the study of consumption enriches our understanding of modern Jewish history and how a focus on consumer goods and practices illuminates the study of Jewish religious observance, ethnic identities, gender formations, and immigrant trajectories across the globe.
