Punto di partenza e nucleo strutturale di questo contributo su alcuni autori del Novecento italiano è il mito, inteso come recupero di simboli della tradizione letteraria, anche classica, e ricerca di un nuovo e personale codice lirico: una metamórphosis che segue i processi espressivi della fantasia poetica. Dalle tracce, quindi, del mito bucolico in Quasimodo e Ungaretti, segnali di un locus ideale al di là della realtà personale e collettiva dell’uomo, fino agli archetipi classicheggianti della memoria, del tempo, del viaggio, delle origini della propria esistenza, in Cardarelli e Vittorini. Un incontro, quello tra mytos e póiesis, che conduce, inoltre, ad un processo mitopoietico di creazione di nuovi miti, contemporaneamente individuali e universali, colti nelle loro mutazioni tra passato e presente.

This collection draws on cutting-edge work that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries to offer new perspectives on the importance of visuality and the imagination in the work of Luigi Pirandello, the great Italian modernist. The volume re-examines traditional critical notions central to the study of Pirandello by focusing on the importance of the visual imagination in his poetics and aesthetics, an area of multimedia investigation which has not yet received ample attention in English-language books. Putting scholarship on Pirandello in conversation with new work on the multimedia dimensions of modernism, the volume examines how Pirandello worked across and was adapted through multiple media. It also brings Pirandello into a cross-disciplinary dialogue with new approaches to Italian cultural studies to show how his work remains relevant to scholarly conversations across the field. The essays in this collection highlight the ways in which Pirandello is engaged not only in literature and theatre but also in the visual arts, film, and music. At the same time, they emphasize the ways in which this multimedia creativity enables Pirandello to pursue complex philosophical thoughts, and how scholars’ interpretation of his works can provide new insights into problems facing us today. Benjamin G. Kohl (1938-2010) taught at Vassar College from 1966 till his retirement as Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities in 2001. His doctoral research at The Johns Hopkins University was directed by Frederic C. Lane, and his principal historical interests focused on northern Italy during the Renaissance, especially on Padua and Venice. His scholarly production includes the volumes Padua under the Carrara, 1318-1405 (1998), and Culture and Politics in Early Renaissance Padua (2001), and the online database The Rulers of Venice, 1332-1524 (2009). The database is eloquent testimony of his priority attention to historical sources and to their accessibility, and also of his enthusiasm for collaboration and sharing among scholars.
