While most books on architecture concentrate on spatial themes, this book explores architecture's temporal dimensions. Through a series of close readings of buildings, both contemporary and classic, it demonstrates the centrality of time in modern architecture, and shows why an understanding of time is critical to understanding good architecture. All buildings exist in time. Even if designed for permanence, they change, slowly but inevitably. They change use, they accrue history and meaning, they decay – all of these processes are inscribed in time. So too is the path traced by the sun through a building, and the movements of the human body from room to room. Time, this book argues, is the framework for our spatial experience of architecture, and a key dimension of a building's structure and significance. Building Time presents twelve close readings of buildings and artworks which explore this idea. Examining works by distinctive modern architects – from Eileen Gray to Álvaro Siza and Wang Shu – it takes the reader, in some cases literally step-by-step, through a built work, and provides insightful reflections on the importance of 'making space for time' in architectural design. This is a book for both theorists and for architectural designers. Through it, theorists will find a way to rethink the fundamental premises and aims of design work, while designers will rediscover the order and ideas that shape the world around them-its buildings, interiors, and landscapes.

Temporality is inherently how any living being experiences existence, however when it comes to the design of the built environment the it seems to be one of the last things considered when designing. The interval of time has untapped potential to manifest and represent the phenomenon, creating spaces that consider how we move through space. To understand the how to begin to work with the interval of time, a thorough study into Etienne-Jules Marey conducted. Marey was a French inventor who dedicated his life to uncovering the mysteries of movement through chronophotography. Marey's contemporary Eadweard Muybridge followed a similar career path with a focus on recreating movement through cinema. Both methods influence how to move forward with implementing temporality into a design process. The study of movement is also essential to the topic of displacement over time. The speeds at which movement occurs, and where it occurs can have massive repercussions on a site. Paul Virilio, A French philosopher wrote about the politics of speed, and through his study of how cities change, comparing the movement within to an engine. His study is integral to understanding how cities change over time. Greater Sudbury was chosen as a city to study in regards to interval and speed due to its unique nature. Sudbury is made of man smaller cities and towns that are all connected by highways, challenging the typical grid format. This creates a unique problem of having a desolate town center since each smaller town has their own center, while the greater city has no common crossing point between them. To combat this issue a transport nexus is proposed to unify methods of transportation across Greater Sudbury to create one common place of intersection at the city's core. In addition to the nexus, a market is proposed to create a program rich environment that encourages interaction and exploration. This intent is to increase the daily traffic through what would be the new city center, while manifesting the interval of time within the buildings. The methodology conducted to reach the desired outcome is a series of iterative and cyclical processes that challenge traditional design work flows to encourage a focus on designing for temporality as much as it does spatially. Starting with digital collage and eventually ending with projection; the work conducted demonstrates a nonlinear work flow through play to manifest architecture that is both practical and imbued with temporal essence.

Brain Grounded Theory Of Temporal And Spatial Design written by Yoichi Ando and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-03 with Technology & Engineering categories.

In this book, brain-grounded theory of temporal and spatial design in architecture and the environment is discussed. The author believes that it is a key to solving such global problems as environmental disorders and severe climate change as well as conflicts that are caused by the ill-conceived notion of “time is money”. There are three phases or aspects of a person’s life: the physical life, the spiritual or mental life, and the third stage of life, when a person moves from middle age into old age and can choose what he or she wishes to do instead of simply what must be done. This book describes the temporal design of the environment based on the theory of subjective preference, which could make it possible for an individual to realize a healthy life in all three phases. In his previously published work, the present author wrote that the theory of subjective preference has been established for the sound and visual fields based on neural evidence, and that subjective preference is an overall response of cooperating temporal and spatial factors, associated with the brain’s left and right hemispheres, respectively. In this book, based on that theory, some examples are shown for the temporal design of architecture and the environment, which may play important roles in the development of personality, thus inducing creativity. Also discussed is how all individuals may find their own personality and develop it according to the preferred direction of their individual lives.

The traditional veneration of architecture for its monumental and enduring qualities seems to be changing. Architects and other designers are moving away from seeking permanence towards a more open, creative use of what time has to offer. This is revealed in new approaches to historic preservation, the proliferation of temporary structures, concerns regarding sustainability, and the employment of time-efficient processes. Architecture Timed explores the role of ideas about time in the design inclinations and choices of contemporary designers of the environment. Contributors consider how the new can be incorporated into the old; how designing for the very short term has significant advantages; how what is temporary can be re-used; and how the design of materials, buildings and landscapes can improve sustainability and enhance experiences of time passing. Many designers have replaced the ideal of ‘timelessness’ and the view of time as a series of singular, static moments with an enriched and more nuanced perspective, treating time as a source of inspiration to be embraced, not a condition to be defended against. Contributors include: Juhani Pallasmaa, Brian McGrath, Federica Goffi, Jill Stoner, Richard Garber and Eric Parry. Designers featured include: Agence Ter, Shigeru Ban, BanG Studio, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, EMF Landscape Architects, Gluck+, GRO Architects, Interboro Partners, Toyo Ito, Kengo Kuma, Enric Miralles, Eric Parry Architects, Carlo Scarpa, Taylor Cullity Lethlean, UNStudio and Peter Zumthor.

Expanded Architecture written by Claudia Perren and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Art and architecture categories.

Expanded architecture' comprises more than 20 international architects and artists who explore diverse notions of an expanded architecture through spatio-temporal installations, performances, and sound projects. The projects are contextualised in three buildings in Sydney designed by Harry Seidler, who studied under Walter Gropius at Harvard University. Following the Bauhaus tradition, Seidler is also well known for his extensive collaborations with artists such as Josef Albers, Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, Lin Utzon, and Sol LeWitt. Expanded Architecture presents an account of how Seidler's buildings have been used as a charged setting for a series of experimental encounters, here combined with a collection of essays by contemporary thinkers and critics with the aim of reflecting on new approaches in the relation between art and architecture.

The Temporal Dimension Of Architecture written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with categories.

This thesis examines the fourth dimension of architecture, the temporal dimension. While many social trends show a public yearning for a deeper connection between the built environment and time, the general architectural discourse only addresses the issue stylistically. Architectural works are evaluated on their newness or heritage, respectively based on their degree of novelty or their incorporation of historical imagery. This polemic fails to address the human experience of time and its complex phenomena. Thus, outside of this stylistic discourse, can architecture better provide the user with rich sensations of time? This thesis examines the works of several architects in order to formulate a design methodology that engages a broader spectrum of this ethereal dimension. It proposes that, by building in a manner that heightens the awareness of a layered, complex model of time, one might heighten awareness of time's continuous movement and subsequently generate comfort with its passage.

Design History And Time written by Zoë Hendon and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-21 with Design categories.

Design, History and Time reflects on the nature of time in relation to design, in both past and contemporary contexts. In contrast to a traditional design historical approach which emphasises schools and movements, this volume addresses time as a continuum and considers the importance of temporality for design practice and history. Contributors address how designers, design historians and design thinkers might respond to the global challenges of time, the rhythms of work, and the increasing speed of life and communication between different communities. They consider how the past informs the present and the future in terms of design; the importance of time-based design practices such as rapid prototyping and slow design, time in relation to memory and forgetting, and artefacts such as the archive for which time is key, and ponder the design of time itself. Showcasing the work of fifteen design scholars from a range of international contexts, the book provides an essential text for thinking about changing attitudes to the temporal.
