Many books from symposia describe the current status in well established fields of research, where much is known and where the loose ends are only details in the picture. The topic dealt with here does not fall into this pattern. The study of time as a parameter in its own right is difficult, and the loose ends tend to do minate the present picture. Although the book does provide the reader with an overview of the field, its main value is probably to act as a source of "food for thought" for those interested in the function of sense organs and nervous systems as substrates for behaviour. The Introduction is intended to provide the readers of the book with a short guide to the topiCS discussed in the different chapters. The rather detailed Index may help those looking for information on specific topiCS. The Index also explains most of the abbreviations used in the book. The basic idea of the Danavox symposia is to invite a small group of experts to discuss a rather narrow theme in sound communication. The small number of active par tiCipants has the advantage of encouraging intense dis cussions and of avoiding overloading the program. On the other hand, selecting the partiCipants is difficult.

The Sense of Hearing is a truly accessible introduction to auditory perception that is intended for students approaching the subject for the first time, and as a foundation for more advanced study. The second edition has been thoroughly revised throughout, and included new chapters on music, hearing impairment, and a new appendix describing research methodologies. In clear and authoritative prose, the fundamental aspects of hearing are addressed. The reader is introduced to the nature of sound and the spectrum, and the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system. Basic auditory processes including frequency selectivity, loudness and pitch perception, temporal resolution, and sound localization are explained. The reader is led to an understanding of the remarkable abilities of the auditory system in a systematic and coherent way. In subsequent chapters, it is shown how complex processes, such as perceptual organization, speech perception, and music perception, are dependent on the initial analysis that occurs when sounds enter the ear. Finally, a chapter on hearing impairment provides an introduction to disorders of the auditory system. The text benefits from 162 original illustrations, including uncluttered diagrams that illuminate auditory mechanisms. An extensive glossary provides definitions of technical terms. The emphasis is on explanation and clarity of style throughout, making The Sense of Hearing an essential resource for students and educators involved in this sometimes challenging field.

"Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population and individuals become more likely to develop different kinds of health problems. Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, is almost ubiquitous in older age. This condition has been linked with accelerated dementia, isolation and depression. Despite this, the cortical component of presbycusis is poorly understood in humans. The use of invasive electrode methods in animal research provided details on the ageing of the auditory system thanks to this technique's excellent resolution in both the spatial and temporal domains. Spectro-temporal receptive fields of individual neurons revealed age-related differences in sound processing of both these modalities. In the context of human research, methods currently employed include fMRI, boasting excellent spatial but weaker temporal resolutions, and electrophysiology, with limited spatial resolution but superior temporal resolution. This yielded two distinct bodies of literature concerning the ageing human auditory cortex with a knowledge gap between the two. This thesis proposes a way to bridge this gap in knowledge. Chapter 2 introduces a new technique in magnetoencephalography (MEG). By using a dense pure tone stimulus and harnessing MEG's excellent temporal resolution paired with recent advances in spatial resolution, we obtained spectro-temporal receptive fields for the sources of the auditory cortex. These describe neuronal time and frequency responses, allowing to derive descriptors such as the preferred frequency, the latency, the bandwidth, the temporal modulation rate and excitation/inhibition values. Chapter 3 then describes the differences that this novel MEG technique reveals between younger and older adults. Most strikingly, responses to the pure tone stimulus, which occurred exclusively in the right auditory cortex of younger adults, become delateralized in older adults. Additional results include faster latencies on the right auditory cortex of older adults and differences in inhibition. Chapter 3 is only one example of research on the auditory cortex that can be explored with the novel MEG technique. Chapter 4 includes a brief discussion addressing other possible applications including but not limited to the context of ageing"--
