"Ten Giants of Jazz" is an anthology that explores the seminal contributions of a variety of great jazz artists. Although the expression giants of jazz is not new, this book takes the approach that certain artists are so closely linked to certain genres, that to tell their stories is to tell the (hi)story of jazz itself.Some of the jazz giants featured in this text are Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and Dizzy Gillespie. The book also discusses Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and John Coltrane. By learning about these artists, readers will also learn about genres of jazz. The book begins with Early New Orleans and Chicago jazz, then moves on to swing/big-band music, bebop, Latin, hard bop, cool, modal, fusion, and free form/avant-garde jazz. The final chapter presents a discussion of jazz today and the vibrant promise of its future.The numerous book excerpts provide a lively, engaging, narrative-oriented reading experience for students. Bubsey is a professional trombonist on the faculty of East Tennessee State University where he teaches the history of jazz. He holds the B.M.E. degree from The Ohio State University, the M.M. degree from Butler University, and is presently a Ph.D. candidate in musicology at the University of Kentucky. His scholarly interest is the music of the twentieth century. He has over nineteen years of experience in music education, and his performance experiences over the past thirty years include a wide variety of settings such as symphony orchestra, brass quintet, theater orchestra, and jazz big band. While a member of the prestigious United States Army Field Band in Washington D.C., he performed with the Jazz Ambassadors on their 1989 tour of India.
