WINNER OF THE 2013 PRIME MINISTER'S LITERARY AWARD FOR AUSTRALIAN HISTORY WINNER OF THE 2012 MANNING CLARK HOUSE NATIONAL CULTURAL AWARD COMMENDED FOR THE FAW EXCELLENCE IN NON-FICTION AWARD For Australia, a new nation with a relatively small population, the death of 60,000 soldiers during World War I was catastrophic. It is hardly surprising, then, that Australians evaluating the consequences of the conflict have tended to focus primarily on the numbing number of losses — on the sheer quantity of all those countrymen who did not return. That there must have been extraordinary individuals among them has been implicitly understood, but these special Australians are unknown today. This book seeks to retrieve their stories and to fill the gaps in our collective memory. Farewell, Dear People contains ten extended biographies of young men who exemplified Australia’s gifted lost generation of World War I. Among them are accounts of an internationally acclaimed medical researcher; a military officer described by his brigadier as potentially an Australian Kitchener; a rugby international who became an esteemed administrator and a rising Labor star; an engineer who excelled on Mawson’s Antarctic mission; a visionary vigneron and community leader who was renowned for successful winemaking at an unusually young age; a Western Australian Rhodes scholar assured of a shining future in the law and/or politics; a Tasmanian footballer who dazzled at the highest level; and a budding architect from Melbourne’s best-known creative dynasty who combined an endearing personality with his family’s flair for writing and drawing. This magisterial book tells their stories for the first time. In doing so, it enriches the story of Australia immeasurably. PRAISE FOR ROSS MCMULLIN ‘A remarkably good book … Farewell Dear People has elevated the study of Australian involvement in the Great War to a new dimension in courage, commitment and sacrifice.’ The Spectator ‘There is so much to admire and to praise in this book. The research is prodigious, the storytelling hypnotic, the confidence and clarity of the writer remarkable. Do not for a second think of this book as military history only or mostly … This is a rich book, to be sure. One that I read with such pleasure and admiration. It is a wonderful tribute to the 10 men whose lives we discover for the first time, an extraordinary account of Australia from about the 1870s and into the 1930s, and deeply moving.’ The Canberra Times

The Ten Pound Poms is a story about more than just the small number of individuals portrayed in this book. During 1945 to 1973 over one million Britons left hte UK to start a new life on the other side of the world. Leaving family and friends behind, especially elderly parents was a major concern, knowing in all probability they may never see them again. In post-war Britain conditions were tough, and most wanted a chance to rebuild their lives away from the atrocities of war. Australia provided that opportunity. It offered hope and a new life to anyone who wanted it - a chance to escape. Ten pounds was a pittance to pay to discover if the grass really was greener on the other side. This book tells the candid story of three young brothers with nothing to lose, who in their naivety, saw the Australian Assisted Passage Scehem as a chance to see the world and an opportunity for an incredible two-year adventure. For their parents however, it brought an emptiness from which they would never recover. They left England in 1964 and the countless life experiences they endured strengthened their resolve immeasurably and the young woman who accompanied John back to the UK was an absolute joy. This book demonstrates succinctly the undeniable role that destiny can play in shaping people's lives. The Ten Pound Poms may be relics from a bygone era, but hopefully their spirit of optimism, adventure and endeavour remain just as relevant in today's society as they were all those years ago.

Humanity is sliding toward a collision between global warming, resource depletion, and population growth. The evidence is daunting but we are hampered by anti-science demagogues who tell us everything’s okay, that we’ll run forever on our current course. The problem we are facing is on a global scale, far beyond any individual. It can be overwhelming and it is difficult to remain cheerful. In Ten Journeys on a Fragile Planet, journalist Rod Taylor interviews ten outstanding Australians who have – and are – doing something to confront the perilous state of the environment. This book tells their stories. Featuring: The Activist: Simon Sheikh The Solar Pioneer: Professor Andrew Blakers The Maggot Farmer: Olympia Yarger The Accidental Activist: Charlie Prell The Thoughtful Salesman: Leonard Cohen The Politician: Susan Jeanes The Climate Game Changer: Inez Harker-Schuch The Advocate: Professor Kate Auty The Lady with a Laser: Monica Oliphant A Question of Hope: Dr Siwan Lovett 'The ten case studies, showing what dedicated people can achieve, give us hope for the future. This is an important book.' - Dr Mark Diesendorf 'With the massive bushfires fresh in our minds, we need a remarkable turnaround in policies and actions. The remarkable people who contributed to this book provide us with a wide range of ideas and actions to get us on the right track toward a sustainable future.' -Professor Will Steffen 'Since Homer the world has needed its heroes – people whose deeds and words inspire us, galvanise us, uplift us, afford us glimpses of a better future. In Ten Journeys and a Fragile Planet, Rod Taylor summons ten heroes for our time, the most perilous time that human beings have ever faced: real people, facing real challenges and setbacks, passionate, driven, courageous, wise, unbowed. If there is hope for humanity, he has distilled its essence.' - Julian Cribb, author of Surviving the 21st Century

Elephantine Boabs dot the Kimberley region of Western Australia; Cattle rub against giant Bottle Trees and Ironbarks in Queensland, and Strangler Figs with 40-metre girths thrive in our northern rainforests. Snow Gums and Shining Gums eke out their lives on our icy mountain tops and prehistoric-looking Bunya Pines, which once looked down on the dinosaurs, grow in a few isolated places in Australia's north-east. Australia's Remarkable Trees explores the extraordinary lives of fifty of Australia's oldest, largest and most unusual trees. Richly illustrated with more than 500 photographs, writer Richard Allen and photographer Kimbal Baker went to the far reaches of Australia-travelling more than 60 000 kilometres-to photograph them and tell their stories. Australia's Remarkable Trees is not just a celebration of Australia's great trees. It also prompts us to look to the future to see what lies in store for them. It is a call to arms to preserve and protect our oldest and most magnificent living things, and the forests and wilderness in which they live

All At Sea On Land written by Kay Cottee and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-09 with categories.

The paperback edition of Kay's inspiring life on land ten years after her historic round-the-world voyage On 5 June, 1988, Kay Cottee fulfilled her childhood dream - to become the first woman in history to complete a solo, nonstop and unassisted sailing voyage around the world. Now, a decade on, Kay candidly fills in the details of her life since that historic achievement, painting an inspiring portrait of one of Autstralia's greatest women. Kay's book has been written to answer many of the questions she is constantly asked as she criss-crosses Australia and the world to tell her of her remarkable voyage. She reflects on the journey that catapulted an ordinary woman into the limelight, which saw her dine with royalty and presidents, tour the outback talking to Australian kids about achieving their dreams and take on a gruelling speaking schedule which single-handedly raised more than $1 million for the Life Education charity. Kay recounts the funny, exciting and sad stories that come with life in the public eye, and her profound love for the country that gave her the chance to reach for her star. She tells of the trials and tribulations of her unconventional years as Chairman of Australia's National Maritime Museum and her passions away from the water - painting and sculpting - and the joys of marriage and motherhood.
