The Upanishads are a group of texts in Hindu sacred literature that are considered to reveal the ultimate truth and whose knowledge is considered to lead to spiritual emancipation. In the Upanishads, we find the finest flowering of the Indian metaphysical and speculative thought. They are utterances of seers who spoke out of the fullness of their illumined experience. Upanishad is derived from upa (near), ni (down) and sad (to sit). Hence, the term implies the pupils, intent on learning, sitting near the teacher to acquire knowledge and truth. There are over 200 Upanishads but the traditional number is 108. Of them, only 10 are the principal Upanishads: Isha, Kena, Katha, Prashan, Mundaka, Mandukya, Tattiriya, Aitareya, Chhandogya and Brihadaranyaka. This book is a forerunner in introducing these primary Upanishads to the uninitiated.

Vedas are one of the biggest milestones in the 10,000 year history of ancient India. India has a recorded historical continuity of thousands of years in the form of Epics, Vedas, Puranas, Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads etc. One of the greatest milestones is the Upanishads. There are four Vedas which are Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda. These four Vedas has 1180 branches. Rig Veda has 21 branches, Yajur Veda has 109 branches, Sama Veda has 1000 branches and Atharva Veda has 50 branches. Among these branches, each branch has an Upanishad. If we take an estimate from these numbers, there are 1180 Upanishads in total. Over the course of time, due to extensive invasions and destruction of ancient universities which happened in northern and central India, many of these branches and Upanishads were lost. Historical researchers discovered more than 200 Upanishads as of now. Among these, around 108 Upanishads are available in printed form nowadays. Sree Shankara Bhagavadpada who is known as Adi Shankaracharya coined the most important aspects needed for humans and created 10 Upanishads. These 10 Upanishads are considered as the most important Upanishads.
