D. A. Carson aplica su toque maestro a este problema. Comienza analizando la tipología clásica de H. Richard Nieburh, con sus cinco opciones Cristo-cultura. El autor propone que estas opciones distintas son en realidad una visión todavía más grande. Usando la propia línea argumental de la Biblia y las categorías de la teología bíblica, expone con claridad esa visión unificadora. Carson admite la utilidad de los patrones de Niebuhr, pero advierte que no debemos otorgarles una fuerza canónica. "Cristo y la cultura" no es una mera obra teórica; está pensada para ayudar a los cristianos a desenmarañar los debates modernos que supone vivir en el mundo. Carson subraya que la relación entre Cristo y la cultura no está limitada a un paradigma cultural de lo uno o lo otro, Cristo contra la cultura o Cristo, transformador de la cultura. En su lugar, Carson ofrece su propio paradigma, en el que todas las categorías de teología bíblica deben tenerse en cuenta al mismo tiempo para que formen la cosmovisión cristiana.
