Atravesar las discusiones sobre el marxismo y sus crisis compone una de las tareas más arduas y complejas para el pensamiento político contemporáneo. La historia del marxismo se presenta a partir de un movimiento inquieto e incesante de retorno a la crítica, a las crisis y a las tensiones políticas que estas plantean. De este modo, el debate actual sobre el marxismo se inscribe como resultado de un fenómeno histórico específico y complejo: el derrumbe de los socialismos reales y las transformaciones del capitalismo a partir de la década de los '70. En el presente libro, Julia Expósito aborda las estrategias de problematización en torno a la tríada conceptual sujeto-política-estructura en las producciones teórico-políticas de Alain Badiou, Ernesto Laclau y Nahuel Moreno, explorando los impactos e implicancias del debate sobre la "crisis del marxismo" y el modo en que esta problematización puede contribuir a redefinir el horizonte categorial y los presupuestos del método dialéctico para la teoría marxista y por tanto, para el pensamiento político en el contexto neoliberal del capitalismo. En definitiva, este trabajo habilita a re-discutir y poner en tensión categorías claves del pensamiento marxista, como las de clase, política revolucionaria, estructura económica, Estado, Historia, entre otras, donde la totalidad estructurada de estos espacios es siempre contingente, reactualizando la pregunta por la posibilidad de la emancipación en las sociedades contemporáneas. Durante las últimas décadas del franquismo y la transición posfranquista, los trabajos inspirados en los planteamientos teóricos y conceptuales que llegaban a España de la mano de las corrientes de la historiografía marxista británica y francesa contribuyeron a la renovación de la historiografía española y a la adopción de sus planteamientos teóricos y conceptuales. Los planteamientos marxistas supusieron un soplo de aire fresco a la anquilosada cultura nacionalcatólica y hagiográfica medievalista en la que anidaban los historiadores españoles hasta que la progresiva hegemonía del neoliberalismo provocó una vuelta al pensamiento neoclásico o de esquemas positivistas. Desde ese momento aquellas tendencias pasarían a un segundo plano empujadas también por los cambios políticos que parecían significar el "fin de la historia". La crisis actual pone de relieve la insuficiencia de estos marcos teóricos para poder abordar con un mínimo rigor la realidad española actual en toda su dimensión. Historiografía, marxismo y compromiso político en España reabre aquel debate de la recuperación de los enfoques marxistas o estructuralistas en el debate económico y social actual.
