La calidad de la persona resulta también relevante para la enseñanza. El buen profesor posee siempre unos sólidos principios éticos que dirigen su conducta profesional. Don Ricardo es poco amigo de apartes y trapicheos, moneda de cambio habitual en nuestros claustros, jurados y redacciones. Tampoco huye de saborear con risas una anécdota, quizás contada a medias con Marcela. Tiene la justa rectitud de conducta de quien sabe ser independiente. Resulta difícil en el laberinto español poseer la suficiente fuerza moral para autoestimarse sin necesidad de halagos, o sustentar una personalidad estable cuyas manifestaciones, opiniones y juicios, no varíen según el interlocutor. Los estudiantes de Senabre aprendimos mediante el ejemplo de la necesidad de elaborar una opinión propia sobre los autores y las obras leídos, en vez de depender del momento, de la circunstancia, de la conveniencia. El humor, muchas veces revestido de ironía, pautaba el ritmo de la enseñanza y la hacía gustosa. Qué decir de la sabiduría del maestro Senabre. Recuerdo estar sentado en la biblioteca de Anaya, y verlo entrar con paso decidido camino de los estantes vedados a los estudiantes, y salir al poco con un montón de volúmenes. Serían de hispanistas extranjeros, cuyos nombres aprendimos enseguida, Marcel Bataillon, María Rosa Lida, o de nuestros Alonso, Amado y Dámaso, de Rafael Lapesa, de los grandes maestros de la filología española, la fuente primera y básica donde aprendíamos todos, los profesores de manera directa y los alumnos de forma indirecta. Algún veterano catedrático permanecía varado en las ideas de Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, y nos pedía memorizar las páginas eruditas del polígrafo santanderino. En cambio, los conocimientos gramaticales y filológicos constituían la base y el ancla del saber de don Ricardo. Por eso, no valía esconderse en los exámenes, porque las palabras, las frases empleadas para responder a las cuestiones, debían mostrar que sabíamos expresarnos y exhibir los conocimientos suficientes para comentar un texto. La memorización de las fechas, los títulos, servía sólo para mostrar la cortesía del aprendiz. A estas alturas resulta difícil separar las grandes facetas de la labor profesional del maestro de Salamanca: la de investigador y filólogo, la de teórico de la literatura y la de crítico literario. Las tres revelan las características mencionadas, la intensidad del empeño, su independencia de criterio y la agudeza del juicio crítico. Basta leer alguna de sus espléndidas ediciones, de José Zorrilla, Traidor, inconfeso y mártir, de Ramón María del Valle-Inclán, Martes de Carnaval, de Pío Baroja, Zalacaín el aventurero, para advertir la excelencia del empeño, que supera la mera edición de un texto. Al resumen de lo dicho por otros sobre el texto, la anotación rigurosa y la presentación de un texto limpio, la acompaña en cada una de las ediciones de Senabre una innovadora lectura crítica del texto. El filólogo se alía con el crítico en la tarea de análisis. Y otra lección permanente que se deriva de sus escritos: que la literatura carece de límites genéricos o temporales. Don Ricardo ha escrito estudios importantes sobre la poesía del Renacimiento (Fray Luis de León y Herrera), y del Siglo de Oro (Quevedo, Góngora) del pasado siglo XX (Juan Ramón Jiménez, Antonio Machado, Alberti, Blas de Otero, entre muchos); de narrativa, desde el Lazarillo y el Quijote, para luego pasar por los autores del realismo, llegando a través de Camilo José Cela y Francisco Ayala hasta nuestras últimas voces; lo mismo hizo con el teatro y con el ensayo. Una mención especial merece su libro Lengua y estilo de Ortega y Gasset (1964), sin duda uno de los estudios capitales publicado por un crítico académico en España. En su faceta como teórico de la literatura se ha ocupado de una serie de campos temáticos, principalmente el de la lectura y el de la comunicación literaria en general. Junto a las importantes publicaciones de tipo didáctico, tiene estudios monográficos. Mi libro preferido, Metáfora y novela (2005), y lo adjetivo así porque admiro en él esa mezcla de la voz profesoral que nos habla desde la página enunciando sustanciosos análisis críticos, que lo han convertido en un clásico. Allí se puede aprender sobre la novela española actual, o explorar el papel de lector, o revisar la manera en que se incorpora la mujer a la temática narrativa. También presenta la riqueza del cine, de la imagen fílmica, que compite con la literaria. Subraya asimismo la importancia del entorno digital. Además nos enseña a interpretar la novela, partiendo del contexto en que se inserta el texto, el posterior análisis detenido del mismo, todo ello dirigido a que apreciemos la riqueza estética del mismo. Este volumen nació de unos seminarios ofrecidos en el Graduate Center de la Universidad de la ciudad de Nueva York y la Cátedra Miguel Delibes. Al maestro no se le puede quitar su calidad de profesor, ni reducir a éste a la de crítico. Aunque la ocasión exige brevedad, no puedo pasar por alto la crítica semanal que sobre literatura, primordialmente novela, ha venido publicando en diversos suplementos literarios, como ABC Cultural y El Cultural de El Mundo. Suman más de mil reseñas, donde ha pasado revista a los grandes novelistas de nuestro tiempo. Nadie, y lo repito, nadie en el panorama español ha actuado con la independencia y la firmeza de criterio de Senabre. Autores famosos han sentido cómo la palabra crítica entraba en sus textos, y mostraba el barro con que estaban hechos ciertos ídolos comerciales. Otros, en cambio, quizás redactando sus textos en la modestia provinciana fueron ensalzados, su tarea iluminada, y clasificada entre las mejores. Como hiciera antes que él Leopoldo Alas Clarín, ha sabido ser un vigía de la calidad literaria de nuestra novela actual, exigiendo de los autores al menos dos cosas, un buen estilo y una trama que revele algo de la sociedad. Si encontraba en su camino una novela donde la riqueza del texto provenía del encaje verbal también la supo apreciar. Termino estas palabras diciendo algo sabido, que su tarea ha sido reconocida con múltiples honores, tanto la labor pedagógica como la de gestión, principalmente en la Universidad de Extremadura, su casa académica durante un tiempo. Cuenta con reconocimientos tan importantes como la medalla de Oro de la Junta de Extremadura y la medalla de Honor de la Universidad Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) de Santander, que premió su labor de investigador y la de sabio de la literatura. Su participación en numerosos premios literarios, pienso en el Príncipe de Asturias de la Comunicación y Humanidades, testimonia asimismo el reconocimiento social de su labor. Escuché por última vez al maestro Senabre durante la inauguración del Instituto Cervantes de Utrecht. Su lección versó sobre El Quijote. Me di cuenta entonces de lo mucho que añoraba sus clases magistrales, donde aprendí de la historia de la lengua española a través de los inmortales textos castellanos. Todas las voces, las de quienes participan en este homenaje, concuerdan en el mismo juicio: Ricardo Senabre es uno de nuestros filólogos más exigentes, que ha sabido adaptarse a las técnicas y la reflexión formal que exige la disciplina de la teoría literaria, y a llevar semana tras semana su crítica literaria al público lector. Este homenaje resulta una forma de darle las gracias por su magisterio ejemplar.
