Roas, uno de los máximos especialistas españoles en literatura fantástica, acomete con Tras los límites de lo real una arriesgada pero deslumbrante iniciativa: proponer una definición de lo fantástico, un mapa casi definitivo de su funcionamiento y efectos trazado a través de conceptos como la realidad, el miedo, lo imposible o el lenguaje. Un ensayo ambicioso que no ha querido limitarse a las convenciones del género fantástico, abarcando 'con un estilo divulgativo que no renuncia a la exactitud y a la documentación' el mayor número de perspectivas posibles: desde la teoría de la literatura a la filosofía, pasando por la ciencia, la estética o la cibercultura. Tras los límites de lo real es, al mismo tiempo, un debate con los intentos precedentes de definición de lo fantástico, un paseo por su historia y una reflexión sobre su vigencia y el rumbo que ha tomado en las producciones más recientes. Pero, sobre todo, se trata de una brillante y personalísima teoría de lo fantástico con la que David Roas obtuvo el Premio Málaga de Ensayo 2011.

This volume is based on the section “Transnationalities – Transidentities – Hybridities – Diasporization”, organized by the Ibero-American and Francophone Research Centres of the University of Leipzig as part of the First Annual Conference of the Centre for Area Studies at the University of Leipzig. By now, already a decade has passed since our conference section took place and it is due to various circumstances that this volume has not been published earlier. It carries along, in some sense, its own migration trace. Nevertheless, the questions examined in the contributions have reached even more relevance since then in both, the Old World and the New, due to the various political, social, economic and ecological crisis around the globe that have led to the increased arrival of refugees to Europe and the harsh discussion about a concrete or “intelligent” wall to shield the USA from Latin American migrants, among others. Today, there is an urgent political and social need for concepts of living together in much more heterogeneous and much less familiar societies. Conhecemos o E.T.A. Hoffmann autor de contos e romances fantásticos e de terror. Pouco sabemos, porém, de sua ligação estreita com a música, ele mesmo tendo sido também compositor. Este livro traz ao leitor uma extraordinária sincronia do escritor de textos fantásticos e do amante da música, reunindo, em sua primeira parte, contos e novela que têm a música como eixo, depois complementado em Posfácio por um ensaio do organizador do volume sobre o entrelaçamento dos dois campos na obra do autor. Na segunda parte, o célebre "O Homem de Areia", acompanhado em Apêndice do famoso texto de Sigmund Freud comentando-o, e outros contos importantes dão um painel do brilho de sua produção. E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) foi como poucos um artista verdadeiramente apaixonado e dedicado a duas artes, a literatura e a música. Soube como ninguém transmitir a atmosfera do romantismo em suas obras, alguma das quais seriam transformadas em óperas ou balés (como O Quebra-Nozes, de Tchaikóvski), enquanto compunha peças musicais atribuídas a seu alter-ego Johannes Kreisler, personagem de muitas de suas histórias. Esta coletânea, que chega antecipando-se ao bicentenário de sua morte, visa a justamente apresentar o leitor brasileiro a essas duas facetas de sua obra. A primeira parte traz contos e uma novela ("Kreisleriana", que inspirou a Robert Schumann a obra de mesmo nome) em que a música mais do que assunto, é praticamente uma personagem. Na segunda parte, estão reunidos os contos que fizeram dele um dos principais nomes da literatura fantástica, com destaque para "O Homem de Areia", que Freud analisou em um famoso texto "Das Unheimliche" (1919) também incluído aqui. O Posfácio de Fernando R. de Moraes Barros, que encerra este volume, analisa em profundidade aspectos dessa obra que dois séculos após a morte de seu criador ainda encanta – e espanta.
