La filosofa Metella Murena, studiosa delle dottrine pitagoriche, muore per una bevanda avvelenata. Sembra un suicidio ma suo padre, il senatore Manlio Murena, non ci crede e chiede alla magistratura di indagare. Le indagini del pubblico ministero portano a un nulla di fatto e viene chiesta l’archiviazione del caso. Manlio Murena non si rassegna e si rivolge all'avvocato Lucio Cotta che, fra le carte della filosofa morta, scopre un misterioso quaderno nelle cui pagine Metella racconta di aver fatto una straordinaria scoperta: l’esistenza di un triangolo rettangolo nel quale - per qualche misteriosa ragione collegata alla concezione pitagorica dei numeri - il quadrato costruito sull’ipotenusa non è uguale alla somma dei quadrati costruiti sui cateti. Le misure del triangolo rettangolo che non ubbidisce al Teorema di Pitagora sono criptate in un enigma numerico collegato al Carme 5 di Catullo dedicato a Lesbia e l'avvocato Cotta intuisce che in esso si nasconde il nome dell'assassino di Metella. La trama si sviluppa a Roma, su un doppio binario temporale: ai nostri giorni e nel 44 A.C.
