Il sangue e la violenza hanno costituito, per molti, quasi naturale paradigma della grande rivoluzione, l'orizzonte di significato entro cui collocare le traiettorie giacobine e sanculotte dei suoi uomini più noti. In questa prospettiva Marat assurge ad archetipo e modello del rivoluzionario dall'animo feroce e spietato, quasi irrazionale, vendicativo. La riedizione degli scritti, tuttavia, pone un quesito sostanziale: Marat è, in fondo, esclusivamente l'uomo della dittatura, colui che invoca la necessità del triumvirato romano, che stringe sino a soffocare le libertà degli avversari, che si arrovella e sbraita, sguazzante tra i fumi e il cruor delle devastazioni rivoluzionarie? Di certo, il montagnardo lavora per la formazione di una solida opinione pubblica attraverso una stampa e una pubblicistica passionalmente a contatto con la più varia fiumana popolare. La sensazione che la Rivoluzione sia l'ennesima opportunità offerta a forze particolari per un sempre più solido accesso al potere, e dunque l'ennesima occasione in cui le folle avranno in dono esclusivamente i segni della subalternità, diviene la motivazione esistenziale che lo muove a presentarsi quale intransigente coscienza del popolo francese. La severità delle espressioni deriva dal timore della prossima illusione, da un pensiero che alle giornate insurrezionali e alle sedute assembleari nulla chiede se non il riconoscimento degli ideali e dei diritti sanciti dalla déclaration, la riscrittura di una costituzione a carattere sociale. Les malheureux, allora, dovranno difendere i diritti conquistati, armarsi e riversare l'odio millenario accumulato contro l'oppressione solo in funzione di interessi collettivi ben individuati. L'estremizzarsi della prospettiva rende immediata la rappresentazione del processo di democratizzazione in atto: per gli uomini della Rivoluzione non si sarebbe trattato d'inventare alcunché, sarebbe stato solo il tempo di compiere l'opera.
