El objetivo principal de esta edición es dar a conocer los escritos más importantes de Eisenstein con la amplitud y erudición precisas, aunque de manera accesible al lector que se enfrente a ellos por primera vez. Y la conclusión es que, aunque durante mucho tiempo el nombre de Eisenstein estuviera asociado a una cierta idea del montaje, como queda patente en sus clásicos mudos El acorazado Potemkin (1925) y Octubre (1928), es evidente que en los años treinta cambiaron tanto su estilo como sus ideas al respecto. Entre 1937 y 1940 expuso sus nuevas concepciones sobre el montaje en una serie de ensayos que, en su mayor parte, no se publicaron hasta después de su muerte, y que ahora se reúnen por primera vez. Estos ensayos reflejan en su conjunto la esencia del pensamiento de Eisenstein sobre el cine y sobre la estética en general y revelan en él a uno de los más grandes pensadores del siglo XX. En el presente volumen se incluyen clásicos como «Montaje 1938» y «Montaje vertical», así como sus ensayos sobre el color o la Ana Karenina de Tolstoi. Sergei Eisenstein es hoy en día considerado como una de las figuras clave de la historia del cine. Su contribución a la práctica cinematográfica goza de reconocimiento universal y sus películas, desde La huelga a Iván el Terrible, son enormemente conocidas. La mayor parte de los escritos teóricos de Eisenstein, sin embargo, han permanecido durante mucho tiempo fuera de nuestro alcance y, pese a los denodados esfuerzos de algunos investigadores, aún desconocemos muchas de las ideas que se ocultan tras sus películas.
