Il volume intende sondare le teorie del comico nella trattatistica del Cinque- Seicento, quando l’incontro (o lo scontro) della tradizione e del canone con l’innovazione dell’attualità sperimentale è registrato nella riflessione teorica, accendendo un dibattito vivace e vivificante nella cultura italiana. Partendo dalla ricezione della Poetica di Aristotele nel Cinquecento, il volume esplora le riflessioni e le polemiche interpretative nonché gli esiti delle integrazioni delle teorie del comico, offrendo una panoramica delle più importanti voci che animarono il dibattito sul tema, da Francesco Robortello a Vincenzo Maggi, passando da Gian Giorgio Trissino, Giovan Battista Giraldi Cinzio, Bernardo Pino da Cagli, fino a Ludovico Castelvetro, Alessandro Piccolomini e molti altri. Una seconda parte è dedicata alle Accademie quali luoghi privilegiati di accoglienza di tali riflessioni, luoghi di “mediazione” anche tra teoria e pratica capaci di produrre significativi risultati. Successivamente il confronto si apre alla ricca produzione teorica dei Comici dell’Arte, sondando le riflessioni nate sulla rappresentazione teatrale anche in conseguenza della necessità di difendere la commedia e il mestiere dell’attore per la supremazia della pratica sulla teoria. Infine, il volume prende in esame le diverse prospettive teoriche del Seicento, analizzando le riflessioni di Basilio Paravicino, Matteo Peregrini ed Emanuele Tesauro, nel tentativo di evidenziare quanto il comico abbia rappresentato un momento necessario di confronto per la nascente identità moderna.

Il volume prende origine dal tema trattato in occasione del corso di Letteratura italiana intitolato Letteratura, libertà e impegno civile, tenuto da Florinda Nardi nell’anno accademico 2022-2023 presso l’Università degli Studi di Roma “Tor Vergata”, con la volontà di far scoprire agli studenti e alle studentesse l’impegno civile dei letterati e degli intellettuali che vivono, descrivono e denunciano la società del proprio tempo, tra la fine del Settecento e la contemporaneità, attraverso gli strumenti in loro possesso: la poesia, la narrativa, la saggistica e la critica letteraria. La miscellanea raccoglie i saggi di studiosi e studiose che dialogano con grandi autori e autrici della letteratura italiana, al fine di fornire una nuova prospettiva di lettura declinata su quelle stesse tematiche e parole chiave, quali libertà, giustizia, diritti, impegno civile, che sono poi anche al centro dell’indagine del convegno sulle “Culture del Teatro Moderno e contemporaneo. Per Angela Paladini Volterra” (X edizione, 2023). Attraverso la rilettura di pagine così importanti della storia letteraria italiana - da Vittorio Alfieri a Igiaba Scego - e in un costante dialogo tra passato e presente, il volume ripercorre, dunque, la fitta trama di temi che dimostrano quanto la letteratura sia specchio della società e della realtà tutta e possa anche incidere sulla loro interpretazione e magari contribuire a cambiarle.
