Buku ini membuktikan bahwa problematika otoritas hadis berakar pada pemahaman literal terhadap matan hadis. Berdasarkan analisis mendalam terhadap hadis-hadis (yang dianggap) bermasalah yang terdapat dalam kitab Shahih Bukhari, penulis melihat bahwa stigma negatif terhadap matan hadis yang bermasalah (musykil) atau yang dianggap bertentangan dengan perkembangan zaman, sesungguhnya dapat direduksi dengan memahami hadis tersebut secara kontekstual dan komprehensif. Buku ini menolak paradigma yang menyatakan bahwa problematika otoritas hadis berakar pada matan hadis yang tidak rasional dan tidak relevan dengan konteks kekinian. Secara bersamaan buku ini mendukung paradigma yang menyatakan bahwa krisis otoritas hadis sesungguhnya tidak disebabkan oleh matan hadis yang tidak rasional dan tidak relevan dengan konteks kekinian, melainkan karena ketidakmampuan kita untuk memahaminya secara benar sehingga mendiskreditkan kesahihannya. Untuk membuktikan eksistesi otoritas hadis dan menghindari stigma negatif terhadap hadis-hadis musykil, penulis menawarkan metode baru dalam mengkaji hadis yang penulis sebut dengan takhrij kontekstual. Metode ini merupakan usaha reaktualisasi metode penelitian hadis dengan menyinergikan antara metode takhrij hadis (konvensional) dengan pemahaman matan hadis yang kontekstual dan komprehensif. Sehingga dapat menghasilkan suatu pemahaman hadis yang aktual namun tetap mengakar pada tradisi kajian hadis terdahulu.
