El Tercer abecedario espiritual es una obra clave para introducirnos en las cimas espirituales del Siglo de Oro español, resultando, también, un buen criterio ante el materialismo falaz de la New Age. Este libro, escrito en 1527 por el fraile franciscano Francisco de Osuna, desarrolla, siguiendo las letras del alfabeto, la necesidad del recogimiento cristiano, como actitud propia del fiel que aspire a la santidad. Se trata de un clásico de la espiritualidad, que tuvo especial éxito en el siglo xvi. Encontramos en Osuna toda la temática de la escuela y espiritualidad franciscana, pero su principal característica es la de haber estructurado y divulgado la doctrina sobre la oración de recogimiento que se practicaba en los conventos franciscanos en la época y es luego recogida por la mística posterior Teresa de Jesús, en momentos difíciles de su camino, escribía: “holgueme mucho en él… teniendo aquel libro por maestro” (Vida, 4,6); “un libro, que parece el Señor me lo puso en las manos” (23,15).
