Franco, ormai giunto all’età della pensione, ripercorre gli anni a partire dalla preadolescenza, quando comincia a maturare in lui il bisogno di conoscere e di comprendere più a fondo il vissuto dei suoi genitori Beppe e Teresa, di zio Nando e delle amiche e amici con i quali sono in contatto. Quella di Franco è una famiglia modesta – il padre è barbiere, la madre operaia in una fabbrica di fiammiferi – ma ricca di grandi valori e di fede nella libertà e nella democrazia. Entrambi partigiani, sanno raccontare con semplicità e trasmettere al figlio emozioni e ideali che li hanno spinti a rischiare la vita, combattendo con i partigiani “Garibaldini” in Val Varaita. Sul filo dei ricordi, mentre fanno da contrappunto alla ricostruzione di Franco brani tratti da Fratelli coltelli di Giorgio Bocca, lo scrittore partigiano che ha vissuto quelle vicende in prima persona, escono a tutto tondo la figura di Beppe e, più ancora, quella della madre Teresa, coraggiosi e appassionati e soprattutto efficaci educatori, profondamente umani nella migliore accezione del termine, come avrebbe osservato Giorgio Bocca: “capaci di fermarsi prima della ferocia e del fanatismo”.

«Sono andata a scuola fino al bombardamento di Reggio, il 7 gennaio 1944. Dopo, le magistrali furono trasferite più a nord, troppo lontane per me, che avrei dovuto raggiungerle pedalando. Avevo sedici anni. A casa ho detto subito che volevo aiutare mio padre e i suoi amici. Volevo entrare nella Resistenza. Avevamo impressa sulla pelle l'avversione per quella violenza e per le angherie che stavamo subendo, i rastrellamenti, i saccheggi, gli incendi, le uccisioni pubbliche: era normale essere sfacciatamente antifascisti.» Teresa Vergalli è stata partigiana combattente, nome di battaglia Anuska. Era una staffetta: percorreva in lungo e in largo le campagne della Val d'Enza, tra la provincia di Reggio Emilia e quella di Parma, portando messaggi e documenti, ma anche guidando dirigenti e responsabili militari da un punto all'altro, curandosi che non venissero intercettati o arrestati. Tra il 1944 e il 1945 si è ritirata in montagna per sfuggire ai rastrellamenti, poi è tornata di nuovo in pianura a organizzare i Gruppi di difesa delle donne per la Resistenza e per l'emancipazione, a tenere un'infinità di colloqui e piccole riunioni segrete per l'educazione democratica della popolazione e degli stessi partigiani. Finita la guerra, ha terminato gli studi e proseguito l'attività politica: ha partecipato alla creazione dell'Unione Donne Italiane e dell'Associazione delle ragazze, poi ha scelto di diventare maestra elementare, con la missione di contribuire a creare cittadini consapevoli, capaci di coscienza sociale e di solidarietà. Oggi Teresa Vergalli ha novantacinque anni e dolorosamente osserva che, mentre la storia sembra ripetersi, ancora siamo chiamati a discutere di pace, di diritti delle donne, di scolarizzazione per tutti. Per questo una volta ancora sente il bisogno di raccontare la propria storia. Per ricordarci che tutto ciò che abbiamo conquistato con il sangue e con il dolore - la libertà, la democrazia - non è un'acquisizione perenne, ma deve continuare a essere difeso. E non per forza o solo al fronte, ma nella società tutta.

This book is inspired by the 2015 Italian Art Society-sponsored conference sessions of the American Association of Italian Studies. Its seven chapters span the art of ancient Etruria to twentieth century Italy, and explore a variety of media, including mirrors, cameos, treasury objects, reliquaries, ceramics, and figurines. Contributors approach the topic of the minor arts from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives, including reception, use, patronage, gender issues, propaganda, and iconography. The volume thus fills the lacuna in the scholarship of the minor arts, and reveals that the minor arts are unique and worthy of study for their size, preciosity, patronage, audience, function, portability, and material. Ultimately, in revealing the importance of these objects, the book shows that the division between the major and minor arts is no longer valid, and that these objects of the minor arts hold as much significance as those of the major arts.

Quando scoppia la guerra civile in Spagna, Teresa Noce è tra i membri delle Brigate Internazionali, poi è tra i Francstireurs-et-partisans nella resistenza francese. Arrestata, viene rinchiusa in un lager bavarese, dove viene liberata dall'avanzata sovietica, in tempo per essere una delle 21 donne elette all'Assemblea Costituente. Una biografia eccezionale, che Teresa Noce in "Rivoluzionaria professionale" restituisce alla normalità della vita quotidiana di una donna forte e generosa, capace sempre e comunque di trovarsi dalla parte giusta della barricata (in collaborazione con Edizioni Rapporti Sociali).
