This report presents the results of an experimental program to examine the performance of a reduced-mass concept penetrator impacting semi- infinite rolled homogeneous armor (RHA) at normal incidence. The reduced-mass penetrator ueed in this program is a solid tungsten alloy rod with eight holes drilled parallel to its axis, equally spaced on a circle, with axes parallel to the rod axis. Its performance was contrasted with baseline data for length-to- dameter ratios (L/D) 4 and 5 solid tungsten alloy penetrators. Striking velocity was nominally 1.6 km/s. A determined effort to reduce the scatter in the data by analysis of collateral data from the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and literature sources suggested only a rather weak influence of L/D on penetration even at L/Ds approaching 1 and provided a tentative relationship to remove the influence of target lateral edge effects. It tightened up the holed-out rod data enough to be able to conclude with a moderate degree of certainty that there was no improvement in penetration as suggested by a simplistic density law model. A companion work by Kimsey of ARL examines the performance of this novel penetrator concept computationally, using the Eulerian code CTH. His work explains the possible causes of reduced performance suggested by analysis by Zook and Frank of ARL, though with some relative improvement in performance at higher velocities.

The principal mission of the Penetration Mechanics Branch (PMB) of the Terminal Ballistics Division (TBD) of the Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL). Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, is research and development leading to improvements in the terminal ballistic performance of kinetic energy (KE) long rod penetrators. This is done by using computer modeling and by experimental tests. In terms of the number of shots fired, the experimental testing is predominantly done at reduced scale using laboratory guns with bore diameters of 20 to 30 mm. The reduced scale penetrators are of simplified geometry compared with their full-scale counterparts. The penetrator is usually a monolithic right-circular-cylinder metal rod with a hemispheric nose made from either tungsten alloy (WA) or depleted uranium (DU). Terminal ballistics is that part of the science of ballistics that relates to the interaction between a projectile (penetrator) and a target. In general, the projectile is the package which flies through the air. The penetrator is the part of the projectile which digs into the target, inflicting damage to the target. The primary measure of the effectiveness of a penetrator attacking a specific target is its ballistic limit velocity. The ballistic limit velocity is the impact speed required to just get through the target placed at the specified angle of obliquity.

This monograph covers all important issues of terminal ballistics in a comprehensive way combining experimental data, numerical simulations and analytical modeling. It uses a unique approach to numerical simulations as sensitivity measure for the major physical parameters. In the first chapter, the book includes necessary details about the experimental equipment which are used for ballistic tests. The second chapter covers essential features of the codes which are used in recent years all over the world, the Euler vs. Lagrange schemes, meshing techniques etc. The third chapter, devoted to the penetration mechanics of rigid rods, brings the update of modeling in this field. The fourth chapter deals with plate perforation and the fifth chapter deals with the penetration of shaped charge jets and eroding long rods. The last chapter includes several techniques for the disruption and defeating of the main threats in armor design. Throughout the book the authors demonstrate the advantages of the simulation approach in understanding the basis physics behind the investigated phenomena.

The difference in terminal ballistic performance of four semi-infinite target designs fabricated with different amounts of plate spacing was investigated. Three of the target designs were made from 25-mm-thick steel plates stacked together with either 0, 1.5, or 3.0-mm space between each plate. The fourth target design was a single, monolithic block of steel. Each target was impacted with a kinetic-energy penetrator made from tungsten-sintered alloy at an approximate speed of 1600 m/s. Plate spacing was found to result in increased penetration depth. Several energy sink sources are considered to explain the fundamental mechanisms associated with the observed results.

A candidate 0.60-cal. armor-piercing, fin-stabilized, discarding armature, kinetic energy penetrator, to be fired from an electromagnetic (EM) launcher, was evaluated for its terminal ballistic performance against rolled homogeneous armor (RHA). A limited data set was also generated for high hardness armor. The candidate design is similar to one generated from an empirically based optimization study. The study considered launch, flight, and terminal ballistic performance from a 0.60-cal. electromagnetic gun. Projected performance of the projectile at range was generated using the system parameters (muzzle velocity and aerodynamic retardation) combined with the perforation ability against RHA.
