And yet this is what best describes the place hidden in between Italy's depopulating mountains.A Visual Guide into Terra Incognita is a visual essay by Shirley van der Maarel in collaboration with a group of refugees placed in the remote villages of Valle di Comino, Italy. Most Italians in Valle di Comino know very little about the refugees who are now their new neighbours. The situation is not that different from many other areas in Europe where there is equally little exchange. It is understandable. After all, where do you start the conversation with someone you don't know? What questions do you ask when TV and the news has already given you the answers? And what if you don't even share the same language? But also, how small would our world be without a little curiosity? This Guide is meant to fill these gaps as it takes readers on a journey to the unknown world of refugees in depopulating Europe. It is part of a larger artistic research under the supervision of the Leiden University Visual Ethnography department. From the age of antiquity to the Middle Ages, scholars argued about the existence of places, and perhaps peoples, beyond the world known to Europeans. But to allow for the possibility of such lands and races raised troubling questions: Was it truly impossible to reach the underside of the earth? And, if so, how could its inhabitants receive the word of God? In Terra Incognita, Alfred Hiatt draws on sources both literary and visual to understand the appeal of the antipodes. Examining maps and diagrams, as well as evidence contained in geographical and historical works, poetry, travel narratives, and legal documents, he challenges long-standing characterizations of medieval spatiality as exclusively symbolic and religious. Instead, Hiatt finds, the idea of people on the other side of the Earth provided a potent and malleable symbol for political theorists, satirists, scholars, and poets--as well as for map makers. Terra Incognita is, in the end, the history of a non-place, of lands conjured by the scientific imagination, which nevertheless drove exploration, and which continued to shape the world map, even as they slowly vanished from it.

This thesis proposes that late sixteenth and seventeenth-century maps of the unknown continent known as Terra Incognita are the visual embodiment of ignorance, creating complex tensions between representations of knowledge and lack of knowledge through their borders, forms, and figures. Theories surrounding the possibility and physical form of the unknown and its inhabitants can be visually traced through Classical and medieval sources, culminating in the maps produced during the Renaissance and Age of Exploration, when the existence of, and visual space devoted to this continent began to shift dramatically. As an example of this phenomenon, my investigation looks closely at the depiction of the Terra Incognita on the 1608 world map of engraver Jodocus Hondius, printed in Amsterdam, which portrays the discrete and detailed borders of the explored and ‘known’ portions of the globe with an ‘unknown’ land with discrete borders, scientific data, portraits of explorers, and smaller world maps that delineate explorer’s routes. Hondius was well-versed in cartography and the images placed in the frame of the Terra Incognita were a calculated visual construction, made up of portraiture, Classical and medieval thought, scientific advancements, and conjecture, acting as both propaganda for knowledge and as a visual embodiment of ignorance. Using agnotology, or the study of culturally produced ignorance, I will examine the images contained within the Terra Incognita to explore the implications of that ignorance on Hondius, as well as Dutch exploration, and European expansion at large.
