Come rendere davvero italiani i territori di cultura tedesca, croata e slovena conquistati dopo il primo conflitto mondiale? Quali furono i piani di 'conquista del suolo' elaborati da ambienti nazionalisti e irredentisti prima e dal fascismo poi? La risposta fu nel tentativo di sottrarre almeno una parte delle proprietà terriere agli 'allogeni' delle nuove province per impiantarvi famiglie coloniche italianissime. Simili piani videro il coinvolgimento di enti operanti anche nel resto d'Italia e nelle colonie in attività di bonifica e colonizzazione. L'esito finale sarebbe stato piuttosto deludente. Limiti di bilancio e considerazioni di politica estera frenarono i propositi più ambiziosi. In Alto Adige influì anche il giudizio tutt'altro che negativo che il fascismo aveva dei sudtirolesi, considerati conservatori, cattolicissimi e legati alla terra, quasi un esempio per i rurali delle altre regioni del Regno. La ricostruzione dei propositi fascisti di 'conquista del suolo' e del loro sostanziale fallimento consente di cogliere le oscillazioni e le incoerenze della politica del regime verso le minoranze linguistiche, gli elementi di continuità con il nazionalismo prebellico e con quello successivo al 1945, ma anche il modo tutt'altro che lineare attraverso cui il fascismo definì l'identità italiana.

The research on this area, the results of which are presented in this volume, are the results of years of commitment by numerous collaborators and students. The archaeological investigations at Torre di Satriano, directed by the undersigned, were coordinated by Maria Maddalena Sica (2000-2003), Lucia Colangelo (2004-2008) and Barbara Serio (2009-2014); the surface survey was carried out by Barbara Serio and Marco Di Lieto (2004-2008). Marco Fabbri (for the Roman Age) and Francesca Sogliani (for the Medieval Age) took part in the scientific research and the planning of the investigation strategies. The excavations were granted by and benefited from the support of the following Superintendents over the years: Maria Luisa Nava (2000-2006), Giuliana Tocco (2006-2007), the author (2007-2008), Caterina Greco (2008-2009), and Antonio del Siena (2010-2014). The eighth volume of the International Yearbook of Futurism Studies is again an open issue and presents in its first section new research into the international impact of Futurism on artists and artistic movements in France, Great Britain, Hungary and Sweden. This is followed by a study that investigates a variety of Futurist inspired developments in architecture, and an essay that demonstrates that the Futurist heritage was far from forgotten after the Second World War. These papers show how a wealth of connections linked Futurism with Archigram, Metabolism, Archizoom and Deconstructivism, as well as the Nuclear Art movement, Spatialism, Environmental Art, Neon Art, Kinetic Art and many other trends of the 1960s and 70s. The second section focuses on Futurism and Science and contains a number of papers that were first presented atthe fifth bi-annual conference of the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies (EAM), held on 1–3 June 2016 in Rennes. They investigate the impact of science on Futurist aesthetics and the Futurist quest for a new perception and rational understanding of the world, as well as the movement’s connection with the esoteric domain, especially in the field of theosophy, the Hermetic tradition, Gnostic mysticism and a whole phalanx of Spiritualist beliefs. The Archive section offers a survey of collections and archives in Northern Italy that are concerned with Futurist ceramics, and a report on the Fondazione Primo Conti in Fiesole, established in April 1980 as a museum, library and archive devoted to the documentation of the international avant-garde, and to Italian Futurism in particular. A review section dedicated to exhibitions, conferences and publications is followed by an annual bibliography of international Futurism studies, exhibition catalogues, special issues of periodicals and new editions.
