Gerade einmal acht Jahre hatte das neue Genre Zeit, sich im deutschen Heftroman zu etablieren, bevor die heute weltgrößte SF-Serie auf den Markt kam: PERRY RHODAN eroberte ab 1961 das Weltall. Und nur wenige Jahre später änderte sich der Weg der SF-Literatur in Deutschland grundlegend. Als die Science-Fiction in den 1950er Jahren der breiten, deutschen Bevölkerung bekannt wurde, hatte sich das scheinbar neue Genre aus den USA dort seit mehr als 20 Jahre weiterentwickeln können. Das Medium Heftroman war dabei demjenigen aus den 1930er Jahren ähnlich, mit dem die Science-Fiction ihren Siegeszug in den USA angetreten hatte: den pulp magazines. Obwohl Heftromane zur vergleichsweise schnellen Verbreitung des neuen Genres beitrugen, war diese triviale Form für viele Leser nicht ohne Weiteres in Einklang mit den Erwartungen zu bringen, die an die Science-Fiction-Literatur gestellt wurden! Kaum ein anderes Genre hat derart unversöhnliche Meinungen hervorgebracht, in kaum einem anderen Genre war die Befürchtung einer Trivialisierung durch das Medium Heftroman so groß! Der Spagat zwischen diesen Erwartungen und dem dagegen eher geringen Anspruch, die Leser unterhalten (und damit Geld verdienen) zu wollen, beschäftigte Autoren und Verlage rund acht Jahre lang - dann trat PERRY RHODAN ins Rampenlicht! Die Space Opera eroberte den deutschen Heftroman, das Perryversum war nicht mehr aufzuhalten. Seit 1961 hat es die Serie, die am 08.09.2021 ihren 60sten Geburtstag feiern kann, auf über 3.100 Heftromane allein in der ersten Auflage gebracht, während alle anderen SF-Heftreihen und -serien seit 1953 zusammengenommen "nur" rund 4.900 Heftromane ergeben. In der Folgezeit verloren SF-Heftreihen mit Einzelromanen gegenüber der neue Welle der Weltraum-Abenteuer und Space Operas an Boden. Aber auch die meisten SF-Heftserien konnten mit dem ALLMächtigen nicht mithalten. PERRY RHODAN entwickelte sich zu Vorbild und Feindbild zugleich! Während aber PERRY RHODAN umfangreich dokumentiert wurde, sind die meisten anderen SF-Heftserien zwar nichtgerade in Vergessenheit geraten, aber häufig gekonnt ignoriert worden - dabei spricht ihre schiere Zahl für die jahrzehntelange Beliebtheit. "Gestirne, Gleiter, Galaxien" gehört daher all den SF-Heftserien und -reihen, die ihre Leser zu unterhalten suchten - außerhalb des Perryversums!
