This is the story of three generations of an Italian family proving that anything is possible with honor, dedication and high ideals, and most important of all, the courage to back up those ideals, no matter what the consequences. The Terranova family proves once again that this country became great because of the grit, determination and hard work of immigrants from all over the world. It is about the ageing, but still commanding grandfather, Stefano, who started the cycle. Armando, the heroic son, who left his family and the safety of the United States to volunteer to fight for his country in World War I when Italy first became involved in the fighting. Armando's son, Mario, who fought bravely with the Marines in Shanghai, China, before the outbreak of World War II and because of a tragic incident, which he tried to avoid, was sentenced to fifteen years in prison. Through good behavior and the efforts of his father, he was released after serving twenty-six months. Mario's hatred for the drug traffic in the United States, and his fight to give Italian immigrants a solid foothold in America, made him a role model for all the people that came to this country to find a better life. When he became a business tycoon, he gave lavishly to all organizations that were supported by donor contributions. Mario and his wife Sarah brought up five wonderful children. His oldest son, Steven, was killed in action in Vietnam and was awarded the Silver Star posthumously, an incident that caused the untimely death of his beloved wife. There are moments of violence, tender love, and redemption. The Terranova family overcame all obstacles to making their sphere of influence a better place.

A far-reaching story of an outcast and his bookstore: a home to forbidden books, political dissidents, and cultural smugglers all brought to vivid poetic life “Rivas is a master… His pages bloom like flowers, swerving in unpredictable arcs toward a light-source that is constantly moving.” —Bookforum The Last Days of Terranova tells of Vicenzo Fontana, the elderly owner of the long-standing Terranova Bookstore, on the day it's set to close due to the greed of real-estate speculators. On this final day, Vincenzo spends the night in his beloved store filled with more than seventy years of fugitive histories. Jumping from the present to various points in the past, the novel ferries us back to Vicenzo's childhood, when his father opened the store in 1935, to the years that the store was run by his Uncle Eliseo, and to the years in the lead-up to the democratic transition, which Vicenzo spent as far away from the bookstore as possible, in Madrid. Like the bookstore itself, The Last Days of Terranova is a space crammed with stories, histories, and literary references, and as many nooks, crannies, and complexities, brought to life in Rivas’s vital prose.

Eruptions Of Memory written by Nelly Richard and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-06 with Social Science categories.

In this important book, one of Latin America’s foremost critical theorists examines the use and abuse of memory in the wake of the social and political trauma of Pinochet’s Chile. Focusing on the period 1990–2015, Nelly Richard denounces the politics and aesthetics of forgetting that have underpinned both the protracted transition out of dictatorship and the denial of justice to its survivors and victims. What are the perils and social costs of a culture of forgetting? What forms do memories of injustice take in newly formed democracies? How might a history of violence and an ethics of reparation be reconciled in post-autocratic societies? In addressing these and other questions, Richard exposes the abuses of the past and the present while also attending to the residues of memory that are manifested in street protests, literature, and the media, and in artistic practices from architecture and urban design to installation and film. While cultural artifacts can be powerful devices for resistance and critique, Richard argues that they can also be complicit in reproducing and collaborating with forms of institutional and political oblivion. Both within Chile and beyond, Richard offers a trenchant critique of how authoritarian regimes and neoliberal states whittle away at memory’s critical capacity. At a time of seismic political realignments in Latin America and internationally, Eruptions of Memory makes a powerful case for the ethical, political, and aesthetic value of memory.

SS Terra Nova was most famous for being the vessel to carry the ill-fated 1910 polar expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott, but the story of this memorable ship, built in wood to enable flexibility in the ice, continued until 1943, when she sank off Greenland. This newly designed and updated edition presents the definitive illustrated account of one of the classic polar exploration ships of the 'heroic age'. Put together from accounts recorded by the men who sailed in her, it tells the sixty-year history of a ship built by a famous Scottish shipbuilding yard, in the nineteenth-century days of whaling and sealing before coal gas and electricity replaced animal oils.

TerraNova is a young adult fantasy adventure that tells the story of Athy, a troubled thirteen-year-old. After her fathers tragic death, Athy and her mother move to a little island off the south-west coast of Ireland, where she enjoys being alone - finding more comfort in words and books than people. But she soon discovers she has a much bigger purpose in life than appeasing her anxious mother, when her best friend Byron, a Newfoundland dog, comes back from the dead. An adventure ensues with his arrival - and her love for words, superb memory and even her unusual physical peculiarity prove very useful - while her stubbornness and previously held beliefs are tested to the full, as she uncovers that all is not as it seems. TERRANOVA is a book about friendship, belonging and finding the courage to be yourself.
