L'Irpiniagate, la mamma di tutti quegli scandali, aiutò Umberto Bossi a far nascere la Lega, a renderla un movimento vivo e indisponibile a ogni altra concessione verso il Sud. Anche se alla tavola imbandita nel Mezzogiorno si erano presentate, puntuali, le aziende del Nord invitate al banchetto dalla Dc campana, il partito-Stato. Antonello Caporale il 23 novembre 1980 perse due cari amici, vide distrutta la casa di famiglia e iniziò a familiarizzare con parole come epicentro, cratere, fascia A e B. Ma soprattutto vide da vicino come un terremoto poteva diventare un'ottima occasione per chi puntava a farsi una poltrona a Roma e per chi aveva bisogno di incrementare il fatturato. A partire da un quadro comparato dei costi e del valore politico di quattro terremoti, dall'Irpinia all'Aquila (2009), passando per Molise e Umbria, Caporale ricostruisce in questo libro la recente storia italiana. Prima De Mita e Pomicino, poi Bossi. Quindi Di Pietro, fino a Bertolaso e Berlusconi. Una storia che finisce per tutti proprio come è iniziata, perché i soldi non bastano mai e c'è sempre una nuova cricca dietro l'angolo. De Mita con l'Irpiniagate perse la Dc. Oggi Bertolaso, il primo soccorritore d'Italia, è scomparso dalle scene. E i guai, per Berlusconi, sono iniziati il giorno dopo il trionfale discorso di Onna, il paese martire.

This is a study on the long-lasting consequences of a disastrous earthquake that hit the city of Messina, Sicily, in 1908. The quake killed about 86,000 people, and destroyed one of the most important portal cities of the Mediterranean. The book investigates both the forces that shaped that event and made it possible – firstly, urban speculation processes at the end of the nineteenth century – and the role of that occurrence in creating a complex event that, on the one hand, accelerated trends and tendencies that were already in motion; and, on the other, produced an entirely new social space based on social separation and the raise of a widespread marginal class. Such a class developed within urban borders and spaces that, over the decades, grew according to the same logic and directions that followed the reconstruction. Especially the shacks, still a visible presence in the city, represent the lieu of reproduction both of a class and the whole of the social relations stemming from the disaster. It shows how key-concepts in contemporary scientific analysis, such as “shock economy” and “economy of disaster,” can be aptly backdated. Above all, this study broadens the normal analyses of disasters by showing the stratification of institutional techniques and economic forces that, over the decades, intervened and (re-)shaped the site of a disaster and its social structure.

Collana Antico/Futuro diretta da Claudio Varagnoli Il volume riunisce gli atti del convegno Ricostruzioni: Marsica 1915, L’Aquila 2009, organizzato con il Comune di Pescina (AQ) il 17 gennaio 2015 dall’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia e dall’Università di Chieti-Pescara “G. d’Annunzio”. La manifestazione rientrava nel quadro delle numerose attività che varie istituzioni pubbliche hanno organizzato per il centenario del grande terremoto del 1915. L’attenzione per l’anniversario di questo sisma – che danneggiò seriamente un ampio settore dell’Italia centrale – ha soprattutto riguardato la Marsica, territorio dell’Abruzzo prossimo all’Aquila, città colpita nel 2009 da un altro terremoto che ha causato ingenti danni. Proprio questa adiacenza geografica consente di legare, in un percorso ideale, un secolo di distruzioni e ricostruzioni, e tentare di farne emergere aspetti salienti: per stimolare il confronto tra studiosi di varia estrazione sul nostro grado di conoscenza storica dei processi che hanno modificato sostanzialmente i paesaggi a seguito dei grandi terremoti e per verificare la maturità del dibattito su un argomento tanto complesso. Il fine prioritario di questa operazione è di natura didattica, legato al tentativo di rappresentare aspetti delle grandi difficoltà legate alle ricostruzioni “pesanti”. Quindi convincere della necessità di evitarle, mostrandole come esse sono nella realtà: necessario complemento (e spesso completamento) delle distruzioni, e quindi esse stesse richiamo a favore della lungimirante azione preventiva.
