Now that the third Yugoslavia has ended and the new union of Serbia and Montenegro emerged, Montenegro still remains largely unknown. The path of this smallest republic of former Yugoslavia has differed from the rest of the country during the past decade. Montenegro emerged as the only republic not to be engulfed in armed conflict. At the same time, it remained together with Serbia part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and will continue to form a loose union with Serbia for the coming three years. This book seeks to close an important gap in the literature on the former Yugoslavia. La « question albanaise » et le statut du Kosovo restent d’une brûlante actualité. En outre les rapports entre l’islam et l’Europe sont en débat, et la Turquie, héritière de l’Empire ottoman, frappe à la porte de cette dernière. Dans ce contexte, il est utile de revenir sur la formation de la nation albanaise, la seule nation majoritairement musulmane qui se soit pourvue d’un État sur le Vieux Continent lors de la première vague de création des États-nations, dans la deuxième moitié du « long XIXe siècle ». L’idée albanaise a lentement émergé à partir du début du XIXe siècle. De pertes territoriales en pertes territoriales, le sort des musulmans dans les possessions européennes de l’Empire ottoman est devenu l’enjeu principal de cette genèse. L’affirmation d’une identité albanaise, au sens moderne du terme, s’est développée dans ces circonstances, mais aussi en lien avec les transformations de la société provinciale ottomane. En étroite symbiose avec les autres projets nationaux de la région, l’« albanisme » est devenu une ressource politique majeure dans les rapports de pouvoir au sein de l’Empire et dans la confrontation entre ce dernier et les États-nations qui en étaient nés. Il a donné lieu à une multiplicité des constructions de l’albanité qui continuent de configurer une partie des Balkans. Cet ouvrage fondamental enrichit notre compréhension des conflits contemporains. Il apporte également un éclairage neuf sur l’émergence des idées nationales dans les dernières décennies de l’Empire ottoman.
