Calculates and expounds on the costs to individual Americans of the War on Terror Are Americans in denial about the costs of the War on Terror? In The Real Price of War, Joshua S. Goldstein argues that we need to face up to what the war costs the average American—both in taxes and in changes to our way of life. Goldstein contends that in order to protect the United States from future attacks, we must fight—and win—the War on Terror. Yet even as President Bush campaigns on promises of national security, his administration is cutting taxes and increasing deficit spending, resulting in too little money to eradicate terrorism and a crippling burden of national debt for future generations to pay. The Real Price of War breaks down billion-dollar government expenditures into the prices individual Americans are paying through their taxes. Goldstein estimates that the average American household currently pays $500 each month to finance war. Beyond the dollars and cents that finance military operations and increased security within the U.S., the War on Terror also costs America in less tangible ways, including lost lives, reduced revenue from international travelers, and budget pressures on local governments. The longer the war continues, the greater these costs. In order to win the war faster, Goldstein argues for an increase in war funding, at a cost of about $100 per household per month, to better fund military spending, homeland security, and foreign aid and diplomacy. Americans have been told that the War on Terror is a war without sacrifice. But as Goldstein emphatically states: “These truths should be self-evident: The nation is at war. The war is expensive. Someone has to pay for it.”

'Which of us do you prefer?' As a baby, Michael Clemenger was handed over to the unloving care of a religious-run children's home. Aged eight, he was transferred to St Joseph's Industrial School in Tralee, Co. Kerry. Chosen as their 'favourite' by two Christian Brothers, Michael endured years of sexual abuse at the hands of both men. Brother Price would strike at night, while Brother Roberts took his pleasure in a weekly bathtime ritual. And even their 'protection' did not save the boy from merciless beatings at the hands of other sadistic Brothers in the notorious institution. Despite the unbelievable trauma of his early life, Michael emerged unbroken, determined to make something of himself, and also to find the mother he had never known. A story of remarkable spirit and courage, set against a background of the prejudices and neglect of Irish society in the 1960s.

A gripping account of the first international mass terrorist attack on American citizens -- the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland -- and its aftermath. The bomb, planted aboard the plane by Libyan agents, killed 259 people in the air and 11 on the ground. The heroes and the victims' families used the law to fight back, and their experiences hold an important example for us in how law and reason can triumph over terror, and how unwavering resolve can lead to justice. Working virtually alone at first, Allan Gerson took on the case and spent the next 8 years on the families' quest for justice. In this high-stakes game of international power politics and legal maneuvering, a precious principle -- that of accountability under the law -- was strengthened and preserved.

The horror and psychological denial of our mortality, along with the corruptibility of our flesh, are persistent themes in drama. Body horror films have intensified these themes in increasingly graphic terms. The aesthetic of body horror has its origins in the ideas of the Marquis de Sade and the existential philosophies of Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche, all of whom demonstrated that we have just cause to be anxious about our physical reality and its existence in the world. This book examines the relationship between these writers and the various manifestations of body horror in film. The most characteristic examples of this genre are those directed by David Cronenberg, but body horror as a whole includes many variations on the theme by other figures, whose work is charted here through eight categories: copulation, generation, digestion, mutilation, infection, mutation, disintegration and extinction.
