Professor Patrice MANGIN President of the XVlth Congress of the International Academy of Legal Medicine and Social Medicine The International Academy of Legal Medicine and Social Medicine was founded in 1938 in Bonn. The motive for founding the Academy was to promote associating and confronting on an international background the scientific research work produced in the various domains dealing with the Legal and Social Medicine. As first presi dent of the International Academy of Legal Medicine and Social Medicine, Professor Knud Sand from Copenhagen, assisted by colleagues of the Praesidium appointed as national representatives, succeeded in gathering together nearly the whole aca demic people involved in Legal and Social Medicine. Thus one year later, in 1939, The Academy became a worldwide institution of 450 members from thirty nations. After the war, what had been before of considerable interest for the progress of the knowledge and techniques in Legal Medicine remained again a pressing necessity leading to the second meeting of the Academy in 1947 in Brussels under the presi dency of Professor De Laet. Since then the meetings of the Academy followed one another every three years. At this point, I would like to thank all the past presidents of the Academy and in particular Professor Roche and Professor Andre for their contribution without which the Academy would not be what it is presently.

El constante dinamismo histórico y su acelerado avance tecnológico hacen que nos encontremos en una sociedad en continuo cambio. Este cambio se refleja en todos los ámbitos de la sociedad, surgiendo nuevas tendencias y hábitos sociales; o cobrando fuerza otros que antes apenas eran significativos. Los logros conseguidos en el terreno laboral (reducción de la jornada, derecho a vacaciones...), unidos a otros factores sociales y culturales, han hecho que se produzca un incremento cuantitativo y un cambio en el concepto de ocio. Su valor cultural y social se ha incrementado; y con él el del deporte, una forma cada vez más extendida de ocio. Entonces, esta mutación del ocio en general y del deporte en particular, lleva consigo una serie de cambios en la estructura y formas de práctica deportiva que se venía produciendo hasta hace unos años: Aunque en la actualidad son todavía más numerosos entre los practicantes deportivos los varones, los jóvenes, los individuos con un nivel educativo alto y los pertenecientes a clases sociales media y alta; se está produciendo un incremento de mujeres, adultos y mayores y minorías sociales, entre los que practican deporte de forma habitual. Indudablemente, estos nuevos grupos de practicantes, no demandan el mismo tipo de deporte que pudiera motivar a los más tradicionales. Como consecuencia, y de modo paralelo a la incorporación de estos nuevos colectivos, se van produciendo cambios en los tipos de práctica deportiva. Las formas que responden a un modelo más tradicional de deporte federado y deporte-competición, pierden importancia frente a nuevas modalidades y concepciones del deporte. Correr, nadar, andar y hacer gimnasia de una manera más o menos libre o fuera de federaciones o grupos muy estructurados, son las prácticas activas más extendidas, y suelen realizarse generalmente por una motivación principalmente higiénica y de mantenimiento de la salud. A este tipo de prácticas le siguen nuevas modalidades, encuadradas en un concepto hedonista del deporte. Giran principalmente en torno al deporte-turismo y a la diversión deportivo-ecológica. Son formas deportivas, que, lejos de buscar el rendimiento, buscan diferentes modos de disfrutar, a partir del conocimiento de otros paisajes culturales y ecológicos, y de la experiencia de sensaciones novedosas que conlleven determinados niveles de riesgo. Además de todas estas formas de deporte, y del deporte tradicional, también se encuentra en expansión, y es en la actualidad la forma más extendida, el deporte vivido a través de los medios de comunicación de masas. Este crecimiento de la presencia del deporte en los medios de comunicación social, junto a su importancia creciente como mercancía de consumo (especialmente en el tiempo de ocio), hace que la empresa privada tome las riendas de las tendencias de práctica deportiva, ofertando y dirigiendo a los practicantes potenciales, hacia las formas que más interesan al mercado.
