Excerpt from Tesoro del Parnaso Español: Poesías Selectas Castellanas Desde el Tiempo de Juan de Mena Hasta Nuestros Días Es cierto que la poesia despues no se presenta con la dignidad consiguiente al ejercicio absoluto y exclusivo de estos diversos ministerios; pero conserva todavia un influjo tan poderoso en nuestra instruccion en nuestra perfeccion moral y en nuestros placeres, que podemos considerarla como dispensadora delos mismos beneiicios, aunque bajo diferentes formas. Ella si no de atractivo a la verdad para hacerla amable, ó de velo para defenderla; enseña a la infancia en las escuelas, despierta y dirige la sensibilidad en la juventud. Ennoblece el espiritu con sus máximas, le engrandece con sus cuadros, siembra de flores el camino de la vir tud, y abre el templo de la gloria al heroísmo. Tantas ventajas unidas a tanto halago han excitado en los hombres una admiracion y una gratitud eternas. Sn ocupacion primaria y esencial es pintar a la naturaleza para agradar, como la de la filosofia explicar sus fenómenos para instruir. Asi, mientras que el filósofo, observando los astros, indaga sus proporciones, sus distancias y las reglas de su movimiento; el poeta los contempla, y traslada a sus versos el efecto que en su imaginacion y en sus sentidos hacen la luz con que brillan, la armonía que reina entre ellos, y los beneficios que dispensan a la tierra. La dificultad de llenar digna y debidamente el objeto de la poesia es enorme, aun cuando, por la prontitud de sus progresos en algunos géneros, no parezca tan grande a primera vista. Desde la máxima vaga, ó el cuento insípido, vigo rizados con el halago de una rima incierta ó de una medida informe, hasta la armonía y elegancia sostenida, y los cuadros complicados y sublimes de la [liada ó la Eneida; desde el carro y las heces de Tespis hasta el grande espec ticalo que ofrecen la ifigenia ó el Tancredo, la distancia es inmensa, y solo pueden superaria los esfuerzos mayores de la aplicacion y el ingenio.
