This SAE Recommended Practice is intended as a guide toward standard practice and is subject to change to keep pace with experience and technical advances. This document provides standardized laboratory tests, test methods and equipment, and requirements for lighting devices covered by SAE Recommended Practices and Standards. It is intended for devices used on vehicles less than 2032 mm in width. Tests for vehicles larger than 2032 mm in overall width are covered in SAE J2139. Device specific tests and requirements can be found in applicable SAE technical reports. Underhood Thermal Test added for lamp assemblies with housings exposed to engine compartments. The Underhood Thermal Test is used to ensure lamp assemblies are capable of operating without degradation in conditions of elevated temperatures generated by operation combined with heat input from the surrounding vehicle environment, including engine compartment components. See new sections 4.9 and 5.9. A new figure 5 was added in section 4.9 resulting in re-numbering of two figures and subsequent references in the text. Table of contents updated to reflect additions and omitted 4.1 heading added.

This SAE Recommended Practice provides standardized laboratory tests, test methods, and performance requirements applicable to signal and marking devices used on vehicles 2032 mm or more in overall width. Changed 4.5.2.7.7 - Photometric measurements and scan shall be performed with the light source(s) steady burning. The luminous intensity measurements (in candela) shall be recorded for each of the test points and zones specified for the function of the device under test. This is consistent with SAE J575Changed 4.10.2.2 to reference SAE J1455 instead of SAE J1889. Tests are very similar and was already referencing J1455 for the temperatures.Added 5.5.1.1 - For any signal and marking device, unless otherwise specified in the applicable SAE document, the minimum luminous intensity (candela) requirement between any two adjacent test points shall be no less than 60% of the lower specified minimum value of the two test points on a horizontal or vertical or diagonal line. The specified minimum value is defined by the individual test point value not the zonal value. This is consistent with SAE J575.
