The lift capacity can be determined by Section 4 and/or Section 5. When the results are recorded, the test method shall be identified. The three-point hitch static lift force test procedure was revised to be comparable to current ISO and to 1990 changes to OECD Test Codes. (See OECD document AGR/CA/T(91)24/REV1 for reference.) These test codes use a static lift force corrected to 90% of minimum hydraulic pressure to reflect usable in-field lift forces. This revision is also being proposed for J2708.The dynamic lift capacity test procedure was expanded to include additional lift times. Lift capacity values for 3 s and 6 s lift times were added to the existing 10 s lift time. This was also done to be more representative of in-field operations.Determination of tractor height as tested was expanded to include rubber-tracked vehicles.The report form was revised to reflect these changes.J283 is not technically equivalent to ISO 789/II due to: aCurrent differences between SAE (ASAE) and ISO hitch dimensions as tested. bSAE does not include a lift test at the hitch points. cISO does not have a dynamic test procedure.

At the time of the writing of the fourth edirion of this textbook, the agricultural economy in the United States and Canada was depressed. The prices paid to farmers for their grain crops were very low, and consequently most farmers in North America could not afford to buy a new tractor when needed; there fore, the sales of tractors and other farm machines were much below normal. The farmer who was the victim of the depressed economy was forced to "make do." Instead of purchasing a new tractor when the old one needed to be replaced, the farmer usually purchased a used or second-hand tractor or repaired the old one. In a strict sense, tractors usually do not wear out; instead, they become obsolete. The farmer who owns an obsolete tractor would prefer to replace it with one having more power, more speeds, more conveniences, a better hydraulic system, lower operating cost, or all of the above. But farmers in the United States, Canada, and other industrial nations will continue to want to purchase tractors that have all of the features, in cluding microprocessors, found on other vehicles.
