Most chapters are focused on testicular germ cell tumors whose incidence has been increasing in young males. Included are reviews on the pathogenesis, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment regimens applied to precursor, pre-invasive lesions as well as to seminomatous and non-seminomatous germ cell tumors of the testes. In addition, a review is included on the diagnosis and current management options for intracranial germ cell tumors in children. Incorporating extensive illustrations and tables, this book reviews the progress that has been made in the curative therapy of germ cell tumors over the past 25 years, progress that has lead to the positioning of germ cell tumor therapy as the paradigm of curative treatment in adult solid tumors. Most of the work has been produced on a multi-disciplinary basis, emphasizing the use of different diagnostic, laboratory, imaging, and management tools. In addition to a scientific and clinical review, a series of detailed discussions on the psychosocial issues, patient support, and management of the occasional problem cases that do not result in cure are featured. Germ Cell Tumors has been carefully illustrated with new photographs that illustrate diagnostic approaches, surgical techniques, and management complications. Extensive graphs and tables illustrate the results of treatment.

Seminomas account for about 30-40% of all testicular tumours. These are usually is found in men in their 30s and 40s. The condition is usually localised to the testes, although in about 25% of cases it has spread to lymph nodes. Non-seminomas account for 60% of all testicular tumours; subcategories of these tumours are listed below. Non-seminoma tumours often contain more than one of the following cell types: Testicular cancer is an abnormal, rapid, and invasive growth of cancerous (malignant) cells in the testicles. Embryonal carcinoma (about 20% of testicular cancers) occurs in 20-30 year olds and is highly malignant. It grows rapidly and spreads to the lung and liver. Yolk sac tumour (about 60% of all testicular cancers in young boys). Teratomata (about 7% of testicular cancers in adult men and 40% in young boys). Choriocarcinoma is rare. Stromal cell tumours are a kind of tumour that is made of Leydig cells (testosterone-secreting cells), Sertoli cells (cells where sperm matures), and granulose cells. These tumours account for only 3-4% of all testicular tumours. However, they do make up nearly 20% of all childhood testicular tumours. These tumours may secrete a hormone -- estradiol -- that can cause one of the symptoms of testicular cancer, gynecomastia (excessive development of breast tissue). This book presents leading-edge research in the field.

This volume presents the latest techniques used to study germ cell tumors (GCTs), including histopathology; in vitro and in vivo techniques for investigating GCT biology; novel methods for detecting minimal residual diseases; and sequencing considerations as they apply to GCTs. Chapters cover topics such as clinical applications of immunohistochemistry in GCTs in men; fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) detection of chromosomal 12p anomalies in testicular GCTs; evaluation of chemotherapeutic drugs for treatment of (cisplatin-resistant) germ cell cancer cell lines; targeted methylation analyses; and circulating microRNA panel for malignant GCT diagnosis and monitoring. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and comprehensive, Testicular Germ Cell Tumors: Methods and Protocols provides valuable information that is useful for both novice and expert GCT researchers interested in learning more about this field.
